It’s only natural that mothers meddle in their children’s lives. At some point, though, the meddling usually comes to an end when the mother realizes her children have grown up and can fend for themselves or, in some extreme cases, the meddling only ends when the mother dies. Well, Joseph Adam thought to take things one step further in Compassion, a supernatural tour de force.

A MOTHER’S PROMISE

Catherine Havard dies on a cold February night, leaving behind her two single sons, Tommy and Joe. She wakes up the next morning, however, in the Garden of Lilith. Her new supernatural existence isn’t at all what she expected it to be, and soon Lilith — the mother of Lucifer — attacks and assaults Catherine but leaves her with no memory of the encounter.

Soon thereafter, Catherine reunites with her husband, Tom. She then learns that she can still keep her promise to find wives for her living sons, even from the grave.

Tom Havard, who’s had his own run-ins with Lucifer ever since his death, explains to his wife that he’s less concerned with finding wives for their sons than he is with the crippling depression they will face and worries about the men wandering off a righteous path.

LOVE, POSSESSION AND LOSS

In steps Sandy, a dental hygienist, whom Catherine has picked for her youngest son. She’s nice, a perfect prospective wife for her son. Unfortunately, her plans for creating a happy life for Joe are foiled when Lilith and Lucifer learn of the arrangement. Soon, Sandy is possessed by a female demon to seduce Joe and drive him into a deeper depression, which will hopefully be enough for the terrible duo from the Underworld.

Joe’s hellish luck, unfortunately, is far from over. He has ambitious dreams of writing a screenplay and is determined to make something of himself, despite the odds. He hoped that Sandy would be able to help him make it to Hollywood, but he’s pulled deeper into Sandy’s seduction, blinded to her true nature.

As events unfold, manipulation turns into obsession which eventually leads to devastation, leaving Joe a shadow of his former self. The worst is yet to come for Joe, though, because supernatural powers not of this world would love nothing more than to own his soul.
