Skewed Muse by Rusty Nielsen
Most of us grew up reading comic strips, which were known as the Sunday Funnies, in the newspaper. They were located either on the back page or somewhere in the middle, depending on which publication they were in.
Back then, comics such as Marmaduke, Garfield, Family Circus and Peanuts were proudly featured and read by millions everywhere. They were witty; they were funny; they were zany; they were innovative. They made us laugh till our ribs hurt, and we all felt so much better afterward.
Newspapers and the times sure have changed since then.
Meet the Modern Muse of Mirth
In Skewed Muse, Rusty Nielsen recaptures that same sentiment with outrageous zingers, a quirky sense of humor and wonderful cartoons designed to show you the full picture of outrageously funny scenes. His sense of humor is very good because with each turn of the page, things just get funnier and funnier.
The characters are from all walks of life and come in different shapes and forms, ranging from people to animals to bugs. These characters are the real stars of the comedy gold that is this book. Some of my favorite characters are the cavemen and animals because their scenes and humor are downright funny and kept me laughing till my stomach hurt.
With the help of his collaborators, Loren Fishman and Chip Cross, Nielsen paints a clear, vivid picture on every page. The illustrations are done in black and white with quotations in order to draw the reader in and keep them there. They were designed with artistic visuals and written very well — and with a lot of heart.
Cartoon Chaos with Heart and Humor
Each page tells a different story or plays out some kind of wacky scene we all know that would never happen in real life. After all, it’s fiction and comedy mixed together! For example, one cartoon features a scene where two gentlemen are on a boat hunting ducks. What they don’t know is that there are two alligators slowly creeping up behind them, ready to pounce and have dinner with the hunters as the main course. One of the alligators says to the other, “You get the one on the right. I’ll get the one on the left.” Witty humor at its best!
It really does take a team effort to recapture the magic of laughter and a good sense of humor that the Sunday Funnies brought to people from all walks of life. In this case, the effort truly paid off.
The illustrations done by Fishman and Cross were done extremely well and with a lot of exceptional talent. Designed with great artistic and comic likeness, each cartoon is drawn out in black and white, which gives it a whole different — but familiar — look. Each picture gives the readers a classic, comic book-like visual, different from many of the cartoons we see in newspapers or on TV nowadays, which are in high-definition color and with a totally different kind of humor.
This book follows in the same footsteps as the comic strips we read in newspapers growing up, with rib-tickling material and visuals full of wit. You’ll find a hilarious gag on each page that will tickle your funny bone right up to the very end.
A Feel-Good Read for Every Generation
You never know what crazy scenario will be played out, but for sure it will leave you laughing, smiling and feeling good. So hilarious and zany! Reminds me very much of the classic cartoons that were on TV many years ago, such as Tom & Jerry, Looney Tunes and Popeye.
So, if you are ever in the mood to laugh and feel good, this book will do just the trick. It is a perfect way to help you relax and find your funny bone. Reading this book will bring happiness and joy into anyone’s life.
It is a wonderful fit for people of all ages, especially children from their teenage years and up. Nothing makes life better than the power of humor and laughter!
