Rise Above by Jaime L. Pula

What's It About?

It’s ok not to be ok, suggests wellness expert Jaime L. Pula, PhD, RDN. But for those willing to acknowledge that statement, are you ready to seek solutions by placing faith over fear?

It’s ok not to be ok, suggests wellness expert Jaime L. Pula, PhD, RDN. But for those willing to acknowledge that statement, are you ready to seek solutions by placing faith over fear?

In many ways, that is the essence of Pula’s new book, Rise Above: A Playbook on How to Keep Energy Flowing. Pula knows everyone at some point faces adversity, trauma and life events that are difficult to channel and navigate – that’s part of the package. But in the book, and in her work as Chief Wellness Officer of Art of Health Sciences™, an innovative behavior change formula using both the sciences and the arts, she lays out a life strategy to help create, enhance and sustain healthy outcomes.

Using analogies, real-life stories and situations, quotes, music and her acute observations from what she has experienced and seen in others, Rise Above helps readers find their own comfort levels and forge their own paths to spirituality, peace, inner calm and flowing energy.

Art of Health Sciences, she says, provides evidence-based features for healthy lifestyle strategies to customize solutions for real people. The goal is to nourish bodies, minds, souls and spirits, to prevent and reverse disease, while healing people around the globe.

“A healthy mind and a healthy body are achievable and sustainable for everyone,” Pula writes. “It doesn’t matter where you come from or what obstacles might come your way.”

HELPS READERS FIND THEIR OWN COMFORT LEVELS

Pula explains that given what’s happening in today’s world, it’s no wonder people find themselves in chronic despair and zapped of all their energy. Rise Above should be thought of as a playbook, a guide to a series of solutions and practices to overcome challenges, embrace spirituality and find paths of empowerment to manage stress.

The book is targeted at caregivers, healers, scientists, artists and really anyone struggling with crushing life events. Facing such matters is not easy – in fact, they are the types of events that people would gladly, but incorrectly, sweep under their emotional rugs if they could.

The ride through life, Pula says, is a roller coaster of ups and downs – a series of defining moments. “Maybe there’s something staring right at us that needs to get resolved, but it’s more comfortable to bury it; ignore it and it’ll go away.” That’s a common response, but not one that will fix what’s broken.

So how did Pula come to this line of support for others? “Given my family and I suffered so much trauma and loss in earlier times, I remained intrigued by how people move on despite tragedy.” She compared people from all walks of life and examined their capacity to change for the better or their difficulty in seeking change. She became obsessed with doing what she could to help them.

Pula believes people can rebuild their environments and improve their lives by changing thoughts, speech and actions, and view life from a different perspective. The book devotes much space to self-reflection and a deep dive into the inner self, and offers self-reflection activities at the end of each chapter as checkpoints to changing for the better.

PULA WEARS HER HEART ON HER SLEEVE

During these remarkably challenging times in our society and our world, people more than ever have sought out a voice they can relate to, believe in, find comfort in, and use as the foundation for improving their well-being. For many, Pula and Rise Above could be that voice.

In her writing and communication, Pula wears her heart on her sleeve – there will be no doubt where she has come from, what she is thinking, and how she has managed to rise above her own challenges in life.

Before diving in, Pula warns readers to be careful in their pursuits. Sometimes, she says, we can even outsmart ourselves – and actually get in our own way.

“I’ll be the first one to shout from the mountaintops that some of the most important life lessons aren’t learned from books, teachers, tutors, masters or even gurus. In truth, we all hold within us a direct line to the Divine, who holds everything we need to know.”
