Leave it to Time Magazine to keep us out of trouble this holiday season – and well, the next few seasons, we would think – by encouraging us to keep our heads in a book with their recently announced 100 Must-Read Books of 2022. What a fun exercise to thumb through their choices for everyone from the casual to obsessed bookworms.
A WONDERFUL LIFE IT IS:
If you’re like, well, pretty much everyone else in the world, you’ll be totally absorbed in at least one if not many holiday movies over the next few weeks. So, if you’re looking for something light to watch that’s based on a novel, we have some great recommendations from our friends at Film 14, who have compiled 22 holiday films and shows based on books!
STAMPS OF APPROVAL:
The United States Postal Service announced this week that they will be honoring with a commemorative stamp the children’s book author and illustrator Tomie dePaola, best known for Strega Nona and Jingle the Christmas Clown. Additionally, the USPS will be honoring the late U.S. Rep. John Lewis, who also happens to be author of several books including an autobiography, Walking With the Wind.

THE ULTIMATE SCARE:
Ann Cleeves, the British mystery author known for books including White Nights and The Long Call, recently took to Twitter to announce that her computer had gone missing, including half of her novel in progress. Luckily, according to the author, she had emailed the manuscript to herself days before. Phew!

ROYAL OBSESSION:
Royal watchers will be happy to learn that Town & Country reported a new book about the UK royals is being written by journalist Omid Scobie. The book, titled Endgame: Inside the Royal Family and the Monarchy’s Fight for Survival, will be published by Dey Street Books and is scheduled for release next August.
GETTING A “PAT” ON THE BACK:
Little, Brown tells us James Patterson will complete an unfinished novel by the late Michael Crichton, the author of bestsellers The Andromeda Strain and Jurassic Park. The novel is set for publication in 2024.
REESE FOR THE SEQUEL:
Variety reports that Reese Witherspoon will reprise her role as Tracy Flick on the big screen in the sequel to the 1999 film Election, which was based on the book by Tom Perrotta.

BOOK IT FOR BOOKER:
The panel of judges for the 2023 Booker Prize have been announced: Canadian novelist Esi Edugyan will chair, while Bridgerton actor Adjoa Andoh, poet Mary Jean Chan, Columbia University English professor James Shapiro, and comedian and Peep Show actor Robert Webb will be on the panel.
ODDEST BOOK TITLE OF THE YEAR, YOU’RE WONDERING?
That honor goes to Lindsay Bryde and Tommy Mayberry, editors of an essay collection about RuPaul’s Drag Race. They’re taken home the Bookseller/Diagram Prize for Oddest Title of the Year, which, drum roll please, is: RuPedagogies of Realness: Essays on Teaching and Learning with RuPaul’s Drag Race.
