Pace's Post

Pace’s Post: Ramblings of Wisdom From a Middle-Aged Doc by Victor M. Pace, MD allows the reader to pull up a chair with the author as he offers his insights on life and a life well-lived. Sections cover extremely wide-ranging conversations, and the author explains in the introduction that “I decided to write about topics that I felt were important to address … from subjects in which I have life experience to content that is fun and interesting. The topics I have chosen cross all ages, genders, and orientations. In essence, they are pertinent to everyone.”

He begins with a discussion of “Risk-Taking,” in which he details risks that he himself has taken and analyzes the more hazardous and high-octane moments of his life. Meanwhile, he follows up on it with a section entitled “A Day in the Park,” which, as one would surmise, is a much more leisurely and atmospheric reflection on simple joys and the importance of empathy. The variegated paces — pun intended — of the sections keep the reading experience fresh as we slip from reflection to reflection.

TOUCHING AND TRUE TO LIFE

A Christian man, at times his faith gently permeates his writings and at others it drives his topics, as seen in “The Sanctity of Life” and “By the Grace of God.” A compassionate man, his principles do the same, remaining steadfast in “My Journey Through Racism,” which is lit with self-awareness, “Bullying,” and “Sadness Is Not a Weakness.” These are juxtaposed with a nice balance of light and personal vignettes including “Amusement Park Memories,” “Dating,” “Holiday Memories,” and “A Cuban Adventure.” Altogether, the mix is indeed true to life, sometimes profound, moving, or thought-provoking, and sometimes simple and sweet.

Some sections are compilations of the author’s favorites and recommendations, such as his top picks if you’re looking to watch some “Medically Themed Movies,” his insider guide to achieving a great trip to “New York, New York,” an assemblage of ideas to keep one contentedly occupied in “Hobbies: Pleasurable Diversion,” and a few ideas for keeping up with the changing weather in “Experience the Season You Are in Today.”

COMMITTED TO POSITIVE CHANGE

One highlight must be the wisdom Pace shares on health, an issue especially relevant today. A medical professional’s voice naturally speaks with authority and knowledge on his subject, and Pace’s is no different. His expertise drives the sections “Medical Experiences From China,” “Eat to Live or Live to Eat,” and “Get Moving.” The author takes that knowledge and adds a personal touch to it when he reaches “Why Medicine?” We all had to ask ourselves that inevitable question back when we were young; what do I want to be when I grow up? Pace reveals how he came to his profession with candor and conviction.

There were the helpful hints, like the fact that he “excelled in and thoroughly enjoyed the math and science subjects,” but more importantly was the intrinsic goal to just be of service to others: “Medicine, like most if not all of the various health professions, allows the professional to fulfill a human need. Most of us yearn to help others in need. We are driven with the understanding that our talents, expertise, and love for our fellow beings help make this world a better place.”

It’s this desire to, fundamentally, change the world for the better that stands out when reading Pace’s Post. One can’t help but admire a man so committed to positive change, whether through his profession, his life accomplishments or his writing.
