Moons by R.E. Mason

What's It About?

Moons is a tale of two worlds at cross-purposes, orbiting around a once-habitable planet. Read how two men, strangers to each other, are commissioned to find and bring their chosen heir back to claim her right to ascendency in time to stop a despot from taking control of both Moons.

Science fiction doesn’t have to be overly convoluted in its otherworldliness. In fact, something focused more on the characters often hits closer to home. That’s exactly what made R.E. Mason’s Moons so enjoyable.

This action-packed sci-fi adventure follows two men — strangers to each other — who must find the chosen heir who possesses the strength to unite their worlds.

“[R]umors were spreading that a leader would be coming from that moon, someone who would lift Antara up from the ashes and give it new life, purpose, and power.”

An Elaborate Quest for Freedom

Supreme Anton, the current ruler of Seraphen — one of two moons orbiting the once-habitable planet of Kio — is nearing the end, and he’s finally chosen Kierstin as his heir. The only problem? She’s on Antara, and centuries of animosity have separated the two moons.

So Anton enlists the aid of Corvin, his great-nephew, and Mooly, an Antaran with a dark past, to secretly retrieve Kiersten and bring her back to Seraphen to claim her right as heir — all while outmaneuvering those who want them dead.

What ensues is an elaborate quest to not only bring her home, but also to free the Antaran people from poverty and corruption. From heart-pounding spaceship heists and crooked assassination attempts to global blackouts and high-stakes political tension, Moons delivers a thrilling voyage like no other.

Sci-Fi Addresses Real Life Issues

While the inhabited moons of Seraphen and Antara have futuristic elements to them, their essence stays true to our real world. The novel addresses issues of poverty and greed, corruption, equality and revolution. Readers will be drawn into the characters’ stories and root for their cause.

Part of what makes Moons so enthralling is its detailed and intricate cast of characters, from the charming heroes to the sinister villains.

There’s the surly Mooly with his convoluted past — one I won’t spoil, but will say involves a false identity — and the strong, passionate policewoman, Tobrille, whom he rallies to their cause. I found Kreed to be a particularly interesting character — mostly because of his ill-fated temper. He wasn’t a good man, and it was fun to watch him continually get what he deserved because he overestimated his own hand.

Mobsters and corrupt cops are at each other’s throats, and assassins sneak around doing the dirty work — and even join in on the good fight. Some characters will become unforeseen allies, while others continually thwart the heroes for their own selfish gain. By the end, readers will be satisfied but eager to learn more about the fate of our heroes.

Moons intricately weaves together multiple narratives to create an exciting adventure across these worlds. I, for one, can’t wait to see where the author takes us next.

About R.E. Mason:

Born and raised outside Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, R.E. Mason is a happily retired, blind octogenarian living in the Bay Area in Northern California. As a lad, Richard always had a curiosity for what he might find on the other side of the hill; and all throughout his life, he sought to find it. Richard had the notion that he belonged somewhere else, somewhere out there, and that someday they would come for him. He’s waited long enough. He created that world, that adventure, those people and friends, where he can go from time to time. This first excursion, Moons, takes him to that other world. And now that he knows the way, he is sure to come back.
