Oh! So Curious About Tattoos by Victor Ledesma

Tattoos have been a part of many different cultures for much longer than we can remember. Now that it has become so mainstream people are much more familiar with the significance of getting something permanently marked on your body forever, but what about children? Do they have any idea of what tattoos are and the process of getting one? With Victor Ledesma’s Oh! So Curious About Tattoos, you can help explain this to your little ones!

People that have tattoos are usually judged harsher than people without. Growing up you’re told that if you are someone with visible tattoos you can’t get a job, or you’re irresponsible because surely once you’re older you will regret your decisions about your tattoos, and so on. That’s why it’s so important to educate children that tattoos are an expression of someone’s feelings, not something that should be feared or judged. Oh! So Curious About Tattoos is a sweet tale about a curious little girl, Amelia, that is fascinated with her daddy’s tattoos. She asks all the right questions, “Who, what, where, and why?” Why does dad have tattoos? Does everyone have the same tattoo? What other tattoos are out there? And when can she get one?

Her dad explains that his tattoos are ones that mean something significant to him, each tattoo has a deep and personal meaning. He also explains that there are infinite designs spanning from all different cultures that could have specific meaning as well. Finally, and maybe most importantly, that once you are the right age, pick something that means so much to you, you’ll be happy to have it forever. As someone that has a few tattoos myself, I can tell you that each of my tattoos has meaning, and when I look down at them, I remember the thing or person that means so much to me and I get comfort from that. It’s like your story is printed on your body for everyone to wonder about.

Educating our children on topics that used to be deemed as “taboo” is so important if we want to break the stigmas attached to them. That’s why books like Oh! So Curious About Tattoos are significant. Plus, the adorable and colorful illustrations by Corey Miller will keep any kid entertained.  If you are a mom or dad with tattoos and struggling to find a way to start that conversation, or you just have a kid that is simply curious, this is a great book to have on your self.
