John Russell has been a highly regarded professional psychic for almost 50 years and has worked with thousands of clients in over 30 countries. As a paranormal investigator, he has physically experienced over 1,000 paranormal manifestations.

A Knock in the Attic: True Ghost Stories & Other Spine-Chilling Paranormal Adventures is his story, not only about his psychic awakening and the abundance of mind-blowing otherworldly confrontations he’s experienced, but also about the point at which he lost his faith and gave up on himself, his psychic gifts, and the beings on the Other Side. But they didn’t give up on him.

We recently had an opportunity to learn more about Russell. Here is an up-close look at his story.

Q: When did you have your first paranormal experience?

A: When I was about five years old. I was awakened by an old black ghost, a handsome gentleman who nonetheless scared the wits out of me but, in so doing, opened up the portal that has allowed me to experience over 1,000 paranormal manifestations as well as activating my psychic gifts.

Q: The subtitle of your new book A Knock in the Attic is True Ghost Stories and Other Spine-Chilling Paranormal Adventures. What makes them “spine-chilling”?

A: Some of the stories in my latest book are spine-chilling because they describe paranormal manifestations that are creepy and bizarre, such as the “dropped marble noise” I write about in chapter four, “Strange Days, Indeed.” As one of my Amazon reviews says, “Don’t read in the dark while alone.”

Q: In the book, you talk about a time that you lost your faith and gave up on yourself. Tell us about that.

A: In addition to being a psychic and paranormal investigator, I had become an ordained minister and for a time even served as an associate pastor of a small church. I had spent years as a psychic and a minister studying every religious theory I could, ministering to the sick and dying, preaching, trying to help and encourage others, praying with people, counseling with people and exercising my spiritual gifts. Religion didn’t work at all and spiritual results were hit and miss, and it became so frustrating to me to see one person healed and another die, one person helped and another stranded, that I turned my back on it and walked away.

Q: What was the most disturbing paranormal experience you’ve had?

A: The one in which I was psychically given information that a young girl with a brain tumor, who I had been asked to come and pray for and counsel, was going to die within two weeks regardless. Everyone in town was in agreement that God was going to heal the girl, and the miracle would spark a religious revival that would spread throughout the state and perhaps the nation. But the voice that I heard told the real truth of the matter, and within two weeks of my visit she had indeed passed away. The experience humbled me, awakened me, hurt my feelings and shook my faith. It was a difficult part of the process in maturing as a person and as a psychic.

Q: What have you learned from these paranormal experiences?

A: That the paranormal is real, that there is a reality to the spiritual side of life with which we can interact and from which we can receive guidance. I’ve learned that religion doesn’t work, but spirituality does. I’ve learned to question everything, to be willing to follow the Truth no matter where it leads, that the Other Side, for whatever reasons, plays “peekaboo” with us and that we can’t seem to get all of the answers we need and that even with a spiritual gift, life is a struggle but we have to keep trying. The greatest thing I’ve learned is that love, compassion and helping others is the greatest aim in life that we can have.

Q: You refer to your “Guardian Angel.” Tell us about that and what it means.

A: I have had my life saved on many occasions by supernatural intervention, and so I believe in and rely on protection and guidance from what I believe are — literally — angelic beings, spirit guides, or whomever it is that watch over us and try their best to keep us safe. I’ve learned that their attempts at intercession on our behalf do no good if we’re not willing to be open and receptive to hearing their voices and then obeying their guidance when we receive it.

Q: While you will meet readers who are believers in your stories, you no doubt will find skeptical people who reject them out of hand and feel they make no sense. What do you say to those people?

A: To those who reject my stories and refuse to believe, I say enjoy my book anyway. You don’t have to believe in ghosts to enjoy a good ghost story.

Q: What is the overriding message you hope readers take away from your book?

A: That the spiritual realm is real, and that we ignore it at our peril. We may not understand all that we want to, we may not have all of our desires met, but there is light available for us to walk in. While walking in that light we must always pray for more insights, wisdom and understanding, simultaneously exercising love and compassion for each other. Also, keep a good sense of humor; it goes a long way toward helping us to endure life in this old world of ours.
