My Little Golden Book About Ruth Bader Ginsburg by Shana Corey

Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, who passed away on September 18, 2020, was a champion for equal rights and an inspiration to many. Now, children can experience her life through the pages of My Little Golden Book About Ruth Bader Ginsburg (Golden Books) by Shana Corey.

We begin by learning about her Jewish upbringing in Brooklyn, NY, her love of reading, the arts and her aspirations to do big things. Ruth said, “Reading shaped my dreams. And more reading helped me make my dreams come true.”

But it wasn’t always easy for her, even as a child. People looked down on her because of her religion and gender, even treated her differently. Those impressions stirred up a desire in young Ruth to work to make things equal for all. Encouraged by her mother to get a good education and be independent, Ruth decided to go to law school, graduating at the top of her class.

Along the way, Ruth met her husband, Marty, and continued to attend classes even after getting married and having a family. Even after she graduated, she found that those same inequalities persisted — many law firms wouldn’t hire her because she was Jewish and a woman. Eventually, she became a law professor and went on to argue cases in front of the Supreme Court before her appointment in 1993.

My Little Golden Book About Ruth Bader Ginsburg is the perfect first introduction to the life and legacy of the late Supreme Court Justice. Not only does it touch on her accomplishments, but there’s also a short explanation about the Supreme Court at the end that parents will find useful when explaining the position to their children.

The lovely, life-like illustrations help carry the story as the reader moves from page to page, covering all the big moments from the late Justice’s life. Readers will feel like they are right there with Ruth throughout all of her crowning moments and illustrator Margeaux Lucas has done a wonderful job to visually tell Ruth’s story.

After learning all about the important causes she fought for during her eighty-seven years on earth, young readers will be inspired by Justice Ginsburg’s life. A wonderful and timely biography for children ages 2 – 5.
