Before You Plug into Netflix, We’ve Got Your Jessica Jones Cheat Sheet

in Fiction by

I’ve been waiting months for the premiere of Marvel’s Jessica Jones on Netflix and the debut of our first female comic-book anti-hero. As much as I dig Agent Carter, Supergirl, Wonder Woman and Captain Marvel, their heroics lean towards the squeaky-clean. Jessica Jones will be our first female hero with some grit under her nails, dirty laundry lying around the apartment, and the smell of alcohol on her breath. Up until now, flawed heroes were limited to men—Wolverine and Iron Man, to name a couple. Jessica will be our first 3-dimensional female superhero. And it’s not just because of the conventional noir trappings of too much hard living and hard drinking; it’s the character herself. She’s deeply damaged and powerfully conflicted.…

Will Marvel’s Jessica Jones be More Than Just Another Strong Female Character?

in Fiction by

Still waiting for Wonder Woman and Captain Marvel to anchor a major comic book movie? Tired of seeing female superheroes shunted to the sidelines? (Hey, I’m talking about you, Black Widow and Storm.) Well never fear, Jessica Jones is here. Yes, Marvel and Netflix just dropped the teaser trailer and release date (November 20) for the newest superhero series that fits in the acclaimed Marvel Daredevil universe.     Just one problem. Ant-Man: Do You Know the Huge Origins of this Tiny Hero?

in Fiction by

OK everybody—let’s get small. If you recognize that as an obscure reference to a Steve Martin comedy album recorded nearly 40 years ago—POINTS! But that’s not what I’m talking about here. I’m talking about Friday’s release of Marvel Studios’ Ant-Man, the comic-book behemoth’s latest offering and the 12th entry into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.   Does Ant-Man arrive with the goofiest concept of any comic-book movie we’ve ever seen? Possibly. An ex-con is recruited to fight bad guys by stealing a suit that gives its wearer the power to shrink down to insect size and communicate with ants. Yeah, that’s pretty weird. But it’s only the latest in a long, long line of literary and cinematic tales with teeny-tiny protagonists.…

Think Marvel is only for superhero fans? Think again

in Fiction by

We here at BookTrib don’t like to peek at spoilers, so we don’t know exactly what you’re going to see when Avengers: Age of Ultron opens on Friday. But whatever it is, it won’t be a superhero movie. Wait…what!? Will it be filled with costumed super-beings laying the smackdown on the bad guys? Yeah, it’ll have plenty of that. But what has made the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) so brilliant is that its offerings go well beyond the adventures of the costumed crusader du jour. MCU movies aren’t really superhero movies—they’re movies from very specific genres with very specific messages that just happen to have superheroes in them. The hero that kicked things off for the MCU is a perfect…
