A World Worth Journeying Through
Carson crafts an intricate world, beautifully painting the setting for the story across the pages. The magical gifts, the stunning natural landscapes, the bustling cities, the delightful animals, and the layered societal systems only brush the surface of the world in this book, but Carson handles it all with vivid detail. I loved the depth of the political systems, the different customs in each part of the world that Bria and Titus visit, and the diversity of the cast of characters. It’s a book that you can vividly picture as you read, walking the mountain paths beside our weary travelers, bobbing in the raging river with the horses, and staring in awe at the majesty of the Edge.
Bria and Titus themselves are delightful characters. I adored Bria, with her wit, her intellect, her stubborn will, and her sharp tongue. Always the one to lead a conversation, to pester for more information, and to ask every question, she is such a full, lively character, and one that we grow incredibly attached to over the course of her journey. Her emotional arc, from her relationship with Titus to her relationship with her family and her home, is touching. Titus, ever the opposite, draws us in with his secrecy and his dark and brooding nature. Even as they progress into their quest, we are still left to wonder at his past, his power, and what, truly, he is after. When all is finally revealed? Perfection.
Beyond Bria and Titus, there are so many wonderful characters within the pages of Monster, Monarch, Maiden, and they are incredibly memorable, in the best way. The spark maiden Dahlia’s sharp edges, the adorable Little Titus and his family, and so many more fill out the narrative with a fantastic cast of characters that will have you turning page after page, just as much as the heroic quest.
