Ashes of the Republic by James Chesterton
Imagine America 20 years from now. How different is the U.S. in 2046? In James Chesterton’s dark speculative thriller Ashes of the Republic we see a future where our current political environment has laid the groundwork for an America that prioritizes surveillance and control over the preservation of freedoms. It’s eerily reminiscent of current initiatives like Project 2025. As we explore a world not so far from our own, it raises the question: are we closer to a dystopia than we think?
With the wild American Southwest as a backdrop, Chesterton creates a country that is governed by a Christian nationalist ideology that demands submission and conformity. In 2046, the American government is under the rule of President Dennison. After consolidating power, he has ushered in a new age where dissent is criminalized and any form of liberalism is persecuted. Under his reign, presidential term limits have become a thing of the past, women’s bodies are policed more than guns, and AI robots snatch up all viable jobs.
A Future Built on Control and Conformity
In the midst of this chaos, Lily Osbourne is just trying to find a job in her field. At a time when AI robots are preferred, degrees no longer matter. It wasn’t always this way. Lily, once known as Charity, was the genius behind Dennison Robotics’s technological advancements. Working under the ruthless Iwanna Dennison, who so happened to be the President’s daughter, Lily was her trusted employee. After an argument revealed that her beliefs no longer align with Iwanna’s, Lily was forced to leave her old life behind to ensure her safety.
With no other choice but to start over, Lily begins to see what life is like for people who fall out of favor with the all-powerful Dennisons. She witnesses the manipulation of her technology into weapons and surveillance tools for the government. When Lily herself becomes the target of Dennison technology, she is forced to look deeper into the system she once helped create.
A Warning We Should Heed — Before It’s Too Late
Chesterton creates a cast of characters who draw you in at every turn. How do people react when their lives are surveilled and patrolled at every waking moment? In a future where technological advancement is used to control and bring about submission, Chesterton writes characters that find and use their humanity to fight for a better world.
The novel bears witness to dark and terrible abuses of power, paired with witty, dry humor. Despite its moments of levity, Chesterton is not one to shy away from the hard questions. As we watch Lily navigate a system that is determined to destroy basic freedoms, it asks us not to ignore the small injustices. We may have our cautionary tale, but when we remember our dignities and fight for them, we can work against a seemingly inevitable dystopian future.
Chesterton masterfully weaves in and addresses current issues so many of us are grappling with: religious nationalism, women’s rights, gun policies, irresponsible governance. Ashes of the Republic doesn’t just hold up a mirror to our present moment — it warns us of a future where complicity leads to the destruction of our own freedoms.
Ashes of the Republic is available for preorder in advance of its publication on April 28, 2026.
About James Chesterton
After teaching high school English for three years in New York, James Chesterton “sold his soul” to the corporate sector and spent the next 30 years there. His experience in the banking industry informed his first novel, Holding Patterns, a financial crime thriller. In his second book, Ashes of the Republic, Chesterton focuses on the world we are leaving for our children. Can the principles of American democracy survive theocratic rule? Chesterton and his wife live in New England in their now-emptied nest, their two children having started their own journeys into today’s already frightening and damaged society.
