Reckless by Lauren Roberts

Paedyn and Kai battle with duty and desire in this highly anticipated second installment in the sizzling and epic romantic fantasy trilogy that’s packed with spicy tension and edge-of-your-seat betrayal.

“For the reckless souls who dare to love and be loved.”

Nothing brightens up your summer like finally getting your hands on a copy of that coveted sequel you have been awaiting, for what seems like forever (or 8 months, but who’s counting?) Reckless by Lauren Roberts is the second book in the highly anticipated Powerless Trilogy and I can confirm, it was worth the wait!

Gripping Continuation of Powerless

We find our characters picking up only five days after the events of Powerless (read my review here), when disaster strikes, the kingdom of Ilya is in turmoil and Kai’s gracious “head start” has finally run out. Although Paedyn survived the dangerous Purging Trials, she is now desperate to escape the clutches of something even deadlier. The act of working with the resistance and in the aftermath of the very public murder of their King, Paedyn now faces retribution from the very Prince she was beginning to fall for.

After swearing fealty to his brother — the newly crowned King of Ilya — Kai is now known as the “Enforcer” and his first task is to hunt down the woman who murdered their father and bring her to justice. As Paedyn and Kai trek across the Scorches, deep into a city where there are no “Elites”, the hunter might just become the hunted.

One of my favorite aspects of the first installment of this trilogy was the witty banter and delicious tension so I was crossing my fingers that would return in this book. Thankfully, our gal Lauren Roberts knows what we want and did not disappoint! This book is a stunning example of the “Let’s pretend we hate each other when in fact we both love each other” trope. I am squealing and kicking my feet loving every word of it.

Fast-Paced Captivating Romantasy

Also, much like the first book, Reckless is such a fast-paced and captivating read. I was completely engrossed with the story from the beginning. The plot and dialogue are very simple but pack a big punch making this such an addictive read! With this being the second book in the series, we already had the bulk of the world-building in Powerless, giving this book the opportunity to be very character-driven, which I loved.

Paedyn is still our resident badass who is the farthest thing from a damsel in distress. But despite her upbringing and rough past, she is still a kindhearted person. As for Kai, he is very quickly making his way to the top of my book-boyfriend list. I mean this man knows how to get ladies to swoon! He believes himself to be a monster created for the good of the kingdom, but really he has a sweet poetic soul. Somebody, please give my man a hug!

The ending … someone needs to sedate me! That cliffhanger was deadly, so 2025 cannot come fast enough, because I will be insufferable until I can read and enjoy the next installment of this series! With this book, Lauren Roberts has cemented her place in my list of auto-buy authors.
