Curing Death by Dr. Mark Rosenberg

Is death really inevitable? That’s the fascinating premise of this unique novel — part science fiction fantasy, part medical thriller, part romance — about a gifted ER doctor who is so devastated by seeing his patients dying that he comes up with a mind-boggling theory for “curing death.” Just like medicine can be used to save people from all sorts of diseases, Dr. Mike Royce believes it is possible to use medical research to combat the act of death itself and possibly even allow people one day to achieve the impossible dream: to live forever.

Sounds wild, huh? But the author of Curing Death brings such an impressive resume of medical credentials to this seemingly fantastic tale that it keeps the reader turning the pages to see if any of this could somehow be real. Dr. Mark Rosenberg is a former Assistant Chief of Emergency Medicine at Walter Reed Medical Center (along with a long list of other medical achievements in the fields of cancer, oncology and anti-aging). And in this author interview, he gives insight into how his own medical experience factors into Curing Death, and if he thinks humanity may ever come to a point where our understanding of death as we know it is null and void.

Q: How has your time in the field of medicine and anti-aging shaped the characters and scenarios you write about?

A: I spent the first half of my medical career as an emergency physician, so the main character, Dr. Royce, is similar to me when I was doing emergency medicine. Some of the characters in the novel are loosely based on my colleagues that I worked with. Regarding the scenarios and patient interactions in the emergency dept, most of them are based on my actual experiences.

Q: Why was it important to you to include an element of romance between Dr. Royce and Nurse Simmons in the novel?

A: Health care professionals who are hospital based know that there are always romances occurring, especially in emergency departments. Additionally, because Dr. Royce was rather extreme regarding his hardcore scientific approach to medicine, I felt he needed a metaphysical love interest to balance him.

Q: The premise of Curing Death revolves around the concept of the “soul”. Does spirituality or religion play into your inspiration for the novel?

A: I spent much of my life being an agnostic, if not an atheist. After years of my own personal experiences, as well as the plethora of published cases of children having complete recall of a previous lifetime, my thinking began to change. Based on the above, there simply is no other explanation other than there is some form of energy that gets recycled after death.

Q: Will we ever have the scientific tools to make something like Curing Death possible? Is your novel a dream for the future or a cautionary tale?

A: I do believe that some day, some or all of us will be immortal. I do not think, however, that we will achieve immortality by preventing the soul from leaving. As I understand it, the soul leaves once the body is no longer viable. To overcome the frailty of humans, I believe that one day we will be hybrids — part biologic and part computer generated.

Q: Do you have plans to write another book?

A: I am currently working on a non-fiction whistle-blowing book, with a current working title of The Slaughtering of Americans, It Just Makes Cents. I discuss the increasing incidence of diseases in this country, to include cancer and autoimmune diseases, as well as neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease. Along with the increase is disease, our life expectancy has continued to fall relative to the rest of the developed world. The cause can be found by looking at the pharmaceutical industry, food industry, gas/oil industry, FDA and EPA. We are all being poisoned in the name of money.

I would also be excited to write a sequel to Curing Death. I truly had a good time writing this novel and I would love to do it again.

Dr. Mark Rosenberg is a former Assistant Chief of Emergency Medicine at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. He currently leads two medical practices in integrative oncology and antiaging. He is also a medical innovator, founder of a pharmaceutical company that develops targeted drugs to treat cancer, and an inventor of a provisionally-patented device designed to stop the “seeding” of cancer cells, designed to convert a systemic disease back into a local disease.
