Author Loses Book Deal After Accusations of Review Bombing on Goodreads

First-time author Cait Corrain, author of the coming sci-fi fantasy novel Crown of Starlight, has been dropped by her U.S. publisher and her agent after readers and fellow authors accused her of posting fake negative reviews on Goodreads. Corrain posted a lengthy statement to X confirming the allegations and apologizing for her actions. In her apology statement, Corrain admitted to creating a total of about eight profiles on Goodreads that “boosted the rating of my book, bombed the ratings of several fellow debut authors, and left reviews that ranged from kind of mean to downright abusive.”

The controversy, which has been discussed by book lovers across platforms, has put a fresh spotlight on the book industry’s ongoing challenges with Goodreads, which has taken on weighty importance in the publishing world for its ability to make or break new authors. Its importance has been complicated by the prevalence of review-bombing, a problem the website has struggled to contain.

“Hunger Games” Actor to Star in “A Farewell to Arms” Adaptation

Tom Blyth, the British actor who plays a young Coriolanus Snow in Francis Lawrence’s Hunger Games prequel, The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes, has signed on to play the lead role in Michael Winterbottom‘s new adaptation of the Ernst Hemingway classic, A Farewell to Arms.

Blyth will play Frederic Henry, a volunteer ambulance driver who is injured in Italy during the first World War and falls in love with his nurse. Blyth called Farewell to Arms “a dream project,” praising Winterbottom’s adaptation of Hemingway’s novel as capturing “all of the author’s unique nuance and precision.” The movie will begin filming later next year.

Never-Before-Seen Raymond Chandler Poem

The 25th-anniversary edition of The Strand Magazine is a special one as it uncovers lost writing from one of the greats — this time, a poem from crime author Raymond Chandler, who has since been cited as a formative influence on crime writers. The poem, “Requiem”, was written around 1955 and has been hidden in the archives of the Bodleian Library in Oxford for decades.

Silence Is Not Golden — At Least When It Comes to Book Clubs

The hottest new trend in book clubs is the Silent Book Club, where people can all show up in the same place and read whatever they want. No talking. Just reading. With 525 chapters globally, these “introvert happy hours” are only growing in popularity. But BookTrib contributor and author Matthew Dicks asks: “can we give this thing a different name? Because it doesn’t sound like a book club to me.” And, more importantly: is the emergence of silent book clubs a sign of a much deeper issue?
