The Hawk's Flight by Elizabeth Jensen

Award winning fantasy writer Elizabeth Jensen is back with the second installment of The Three Brothers trilogy, The Hawk’s Flight (Gryphon Publishing).

Jensen continues the story of the Wolfensberger brothers, the family’s three promising fighters, who are caught in the thick of the wars that have come to the land of Etria. Following separate paths, the three hone their skills and fight for their people. Years pass as friendships are tested and lives are lost in this gripping tale of adventure and the unbreakable bond of family.

In a recent interview with the author, we were able to ask Jensen about her latest book and the series as a whole.

Q&A with Elizabeth Jensen

Q: What motivated you to write this series?

A: My friend Brenna Forrey told me about the November Writers Month Challenge and encouraged me to give it a go when I mentioned writing a novel. I decided why not try it, worst case what I write sounds terrible, and I delete it.

Q: Can you tell us a bit about the brothers? What inspired their characters and what makes them stand out from each other?

A: I am a mom of three boys — Will, Max, and Lucas.  When I decided I was going to write a story I started thinking about how fascinating their relationships are to each other and realized that I could use them as the basis for my three main characters. Although my sons are close friends, they are all very different from each other, both in their personalities and interests. I used that to help develop differences in the Wolfensberger brothers. The oldest is a natural leader, the middle gets into a lot of trouble and is into archery, the youngest is into horses and wants to become a mage-knight. Those attributes loosely also belong to my sons.

Q: What do you think is the importance of family — especially brotherhood?

A: My family is complex which makes me value it even more.  I was adopted and have five half-step siblings. To my mom’s side of the family, I am an only child, to my dad’s I am the youngest of six. I also lost my mom to breast cancer when I was 5. It has also made me realize that people can be family without being blood relatives.

Growing up I got to experience the closeness of my two brothers Steve and Scott. I always hoped that one day my own children would have a bond like that. I got lucky and my sons are extremely close. I wanted to develop the Wolfensberger brothers around a brotherhood like what I have witnessed in my own life.

Q: What authors and/or books have inspired your writing?

A: Tamora Pierce is one of my all-time favorite authors and it is her books that gave me the idea to try to write a Middle Grade novel. Fantasy was a natural genre choice for me, with my love of medieval fantasy and historical novels. Other authors that I feel have also inspired me are Anne Bishop, Diana Pharoah Francis and Kristin Britain.

Q: What do you hope readers will take away from these books?

A: A sense of excitement and adventure found in a rich fantasy world. The importance of family and believing in yourself.

Q: What can you tell us about the future of the series?

A: The Three Brothers trilogy will end with The Bear’s Claw, which will release Summer 2023. While this will be the end of the joint journey of Borus, Kass and Jules to become knights it is not going to be the end of the road for all of the characters in Etria. Fire & Wolves: A Tale of Etria is coming in April 2023 and is a novella length middle grade story about the little sister, Sabine Wolfensberger.  In addition to being shorter in length it will also have illustrations at the beginning of each chapter. I also have started a YA book about the Wolf in his younger years.
