Life in the Savannah Valley has the potential to be different from anything Adelia ever dreamed of. On the surface, it looks picture-perfect. But when she arrives in the retirement community, she feels like an impostor. The rich locals don’t take kindly to a woman who they don’t think belongs among the wealthy. Nightingale (Mark Victor Hansen Library) by Tony Lopes follows a woman’s unexpected journey into retirement, and her determination to find community and live a fulfilling life.

A NEW LIFE IN SAVANNAH VALLEY

After the loss of her husband, medical bills keep Adelia in financial trouble. Adelia knows she can’t continue living in New Hampshire, despite her nostalgia for the home in which she and her husband raised their children.

When her son, Christopher, announces that he has paid for a place for her to retire early, she nervously anticipates a chance to enjoy the comforts of a life provided for her. She didn’t plan to retire for another decade, but upon realizing she can’t sustain her current life, she gives up her beloved job as an art teacher in favor of the unknown.

Things get off to a rocky start when Adelia gets a threatening note from her unaccepting neighbors, questioning the authenticity of her house’s ownership. With the help of some surprising, talented and intelligent new friends, Adelia decides to take control of her life. “The people she thought would cause her world to crumble managed to build her up higher than she ever expected.” She learns to let her insecurities fall away, finally revealing the value she brings to the community.

NEVER TOO LATE TO START FRESH

Readers will be inspired by the way Adelia takes control of her life. Her greatest insecurity comes with the idea of being taken care of. “Your children are not supposed to provide for you. Not when you’ve spent your whole life ensuring they had everything to pave their own path.” But after settling into a rhythm in the Savannah Valley, the world opens up for her and she leaves those worries behind. It is still possible for Adelia to still start fresh in her 50s.

Savannah Valley is full of natural beauty that makes it possible for her to get back in touch with her creative side. Her at-home art studio, a blooming flower garden and the Georgia scenery give her the freedom and the means to return to painting for the first time in years.

Still, Adelia craves something more that can help prove her worth to the community. With access to numerous affluent art collectors, her careful detection of an expensive forgery, and the chance to repurpose an empty room in the art center, Adelia is ready to make an impression. A group of fashionable and clever women works to help set Adelia up for success when they throw a gala that nobody will forget.

INFLUENCED BY THE AUTHOR’S FINANCIAL GUIDE

What makes Nightingale unique goes beyond its warm female friendships, stunning scenery and moments of humor. Tony Lopes writes from a place of expertise on money management, investing and financial freedom. His advice in Freedom at Risk echoes throughout the entirety of Nightingale

Adelia sees how her son, Christopher, has invested wisely and makes smart financial decisions. Her wealthy friends teach her that art collecting is more than a passion, it is an investment, much like real estate. The mansion Christopher purchased for his mother is not only glamorous — it serves the purpose of setting up the family with generational wealth.

Readers will see these themes translated from nonfiction into fiction subtly and effectively, inspiring them to take charge of their finances. After all, who wouldn’t want to settle down and live a glamorous life in Savannah Valley?
