Hello, book lovers! This week’s The Pulse is chockful of book and industry news! The ongoing battle against banned books continues throughout the US, James Patterson is in the hot seat  an amazing line-up of books to look forward to in the near future. So, without further ado, here’s what you may have missed.

STANDOUT READS BOOKTRIB’S DISCUSSING

Horse by Geraldine Brooks: “A thought-provoking and heartwarming book that proves Geraldine Brooks deserves her place in the literary winner’s circle.”

Anointed by Blood by Edith Ryder: “Anointed by Blood may seem benign, but things soon take a darker turn in this plot-driven novel full of suspense and adventure!”

The Friendship Pact by Jill Shalvis: “This romantic tale of second chances and inner strength is sure to sweep readers off their feet.”

NEWS FROM THE BOOK WORLD

This week, actor and former Reading Rainbow host LeVar Burton addressed the ongoing rash of book bans and challenges on The View by simply calling the whole situation “Bullshit”. While EveryLibrary launched Banned Book Store, the internet’s most comprehensive store of banned books.

We wish we could only report that James Patterson stopped by on Late Night with Seth Meyers to discuss his new autobiography … Unfortunately, the highly successful author recently faced backlash after telling a reporter that white male authors are the victims of racism. However, on Tuesday, Patterson apologized for his comments in a tweet, writing: “I apologize for saying white male writers having trouble finding work is a form of racism. I absolutely do not believe that racism is practiced against white writers. Please know that I strongly support a diversity of voices being heard—in literature, in Hollywood, everywhere.”

Josh Andrés Rivera, known for Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story, has joined the cast of The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, according to the Hollywood Reporter. In other books-to-screen news, Deadline reported that Sigourney Weaver and Kevin Kline will star in a film adaptation of Ann Leary’s novel The Good House. Netflix also gave viewers a sneak peek at The School for Good and Evil film, which is based on Soman Chainani’s 2013 novel! Check it out:

AWARDS AND ACCOLADES WORTHY OF NOTE

Ruth Ozeki has won the Women’s Prize for Fiction for her novel The Book of Form and Emptiness. The winners of the 34th Annual Lambda Literary Awards, which honor books by LGBTQ+ authors, were announced Saturday night at a virtual ceremony. The winners include Jeanne Thornton, Mia McKenzie, Alix Ohlin, Brian Broome, Sophie Santos, Sarah Schulman, Da’Shaun Harrison, Aisha Sabatini Sloan, JR and Vanessa Ford, and A. R. Capetta.

MORE BOOKS THE MEDIA’S BUZZING ABOUT

According to People Magazine, Olympic champion figure skater Nathan Chen will tell the story of his life and career in a new memoir, One Jump at a Time: My Story this fall. The book is reportedly co-written with Alice Park and features a foreword from Vera Wang!

Daphne Press has landed The Luminaries, which is being called a “haunting” contemporary YA fantasy by Susan Dennard.

According to reports, Scholastic UK has signed The Boy Who Didn’t Want to Die, the autobiographical story of Professor Peter Lantos, one of the last in his generation of Holocaust survivors.

Last but certainly not least, Bolinda landed the audiobook memoir of “RuPaul’s Drag Race” star Shane Jenek, titled Courtney Act.
