Prolific fantasy writer and number-one New York Times bestselling author Terry Goodkind died this past week at the age of 72. “It is impossible to put into few words just how amazing of a man, a husband, a writer, a friend and a human, [he] truly was,” writes the author’s representatives in a post on his official Facebook page.

Known best for his Sword of Truth series, which boasts a total of 21 volumes and was adapted into a 2008 television series, Goodkind published more than 30 major works throughout his decades-long career. His first novel, Wizard’s First Rule, launched the aforementioned series in 1994.

Goodkind “declined to describe his works as traditional fantasy, explaining that they are focused on ‘human themes’ and values,” reports Publishers Weekly. The author felt joy and a strong sense of privilege in his role as a storyteller, expressing his gratitude for his passionate readership.

The announcement of his passing on Facebook has garnered thousands of responses from long-time readers wanting to share their love and appreciation for Goodkind and his influential works. A few fans even took to showing off their literary tattoos dedicated to the author’s beloved epic fantasy.

Although famous for his fantasy works, Goodkind’s contemporary novels such as Nest (2016) and The Girl in the Moon (2018) illustrate the versatility of his writing prowess and earned him praise from thriller giants like Dean Koontz and Nelson DeMille.
