Martha Stewart's Organizing by Martha Stewart

What's It About?

Today is January 8. According to Martha Stewart, I should be "stocking up on or harvesting citrus fruit." Does Grand Marnier count?

Martha Stewart’s Organizing: The Manual for Bringing Order to Your Life, Home & Routines (Houghton Mifflin Harcourt), the newest of over 90 titles written by the venerable Stewart, focuses on bringing order into your world, one day at a time. The book is divided into sections, approaching organizing from three angles.

ORGANIZING BY THE CALENDAR

“Organize Your Year” calendarizes tasks by day, giving you an easy-to-follow plan that helps you prepare for holidays and other annual events, while mixing in suggestions for household tasks, me-time and family fun activity. Some items will take longer than others (“deep-clean area rugs” is definitely going to take more bandwidth than “confirm a post-summer dermatologist appointment”), so reschedule accordingly. Each household task that requires additional instruction is handily cross-referenced to a section later in the book detailing what to do and how to do it. In between the monthly calendar spreads are bite-size vignettes of relevant tips, tricks and projects.

ORGANIZING BY THE ROOM

The “Organize Your Home” section takes your household room by room, from the entryway to your utility spaces, helping you “evaluate the space,” “strategize the storage,” and tackle every component of the room down to “the details” of what goes in the drawers and cabinets and on the shelves in that space. On these pages are a compendium of tips and ideas, some of which will work for you and your home, some of which may not, but all of which are fodder for additional creative solutions you may find yourself inventing.

ORGANIZING BY THE ROUTINE

The book concludes with “Organize Your Routine.” Once you’ve plowed through a room-by-room organizing binge, you need a plan so you can keep those rooms (and your life) organized moving forward. This is the place to learn about devising an efficient cleaning and cooking routine; a maintenance schedule for your home and garden; strategies for taking care of your kids, pets and yourself; and preparations for entertaining and other celebratory events. For each sector of your home and life, Stewart gives a supply list, helpful strategies and a schedule you can use to stay on top of everything.

In between all this useful information are gorgeous, full-color photos of rooms, closets, drawers, crafts, food, and Martha herself, engaged in a variety of tasks around the house and yard. This is an attractive hardcover book, worthy of decorating the very rooms it helps you organize, and very inspiring to leaf through.

So. Time to go find me some citrus.
