SUSANNA SHETLEY has been writing since childhood where a napkin or scrap of paper was often used for poetry. She has always loved working with kids, and taught middle school language arts until becoming a full-time writer, parenting blogger and speaker. With her children as her greatest inspiration, she now combines her passions for writing, education and helping others to make the world a better place one book at a time. Susanna and her two young sons live in the Blue Ridge Mountains with their cat, Oliver.

Your biggest literary influencers:

Beverly Cleary, Mary Oliver, Harper Lee, Maya Angelou, Frances Hodgson Burnett, Madeleine L’Engle

Last book read:

Smack Dab in the Middle of Maybe by Jo Hackl

The book that changed your life:

The book that captivated me in childhood was the classic A Little Princess by Frances Hodgson Burnett. I read it for the first time in third grade and re-read it at least six times before leaving elementary school. I would hide the novel on the wrong shelf so no one else could check it out. Many other books have impacted me through the years but this was a pivotal book for me.

Your favorite literary character:

Hermione Granger comes to mind. She’s a bold, confident, brilliant girl who has no fear or shame in standing alongside or ahead of her male counterparts.

Currently working on:

An adult literary fiction novel

Words to live by:

“It takes courage to grow up and become who you really are.” –E.E. Cummings

Advice for aspiring authors:

Don’t overthink. Write from your heart. Get the words on the page. You can always edit later.
