GuRu by RuPaul

“You’re born naked and the rest is drag.”

Throughout the history of humans on this planet, there have always been shamans, seers, and mediums who are able to interpret both high and low frequencies and remind humans to look beyond the surface for the truth of who they really are.

As someone who has deconstructed life’s hilarious facade, RuPaul has broken “the fourth wall” to expand on the concept of mind, body, and spirit. This unique perspective has allowed RuPaul to break the shackles of self-imposed limitations. Once you’re willing to look beyond the identity that was given to you, he believes, a hidden world of possibilities will open its doors.

That is RuPaul’s secret for success, not only in show business, but in all aspects of life, especially in navigating the emotional landmines that inhibit most of us as we try to better understand ourselves and the world around us.

As a drag queen, actor, model, singer, songwriter, television personality, and author, RuPaul has had his share of personal identity challenges, which he uses as a springboard to help others in his latest work, GuRu (Dey Street). Perhaps best known as host of the Emmy award-winning “RuPaul’s Drag Race,” RuPaul has created GuRu as a guidebook, using “Ruisms,” pithy sayings and sage words of advice, in the hope of enabling readers to similarly master their own problems and open their minds to all possibilities.

GuRu opens with a foreword from actress, writer, political activist and former fashion model Jane Fonda, a professional in many different areas like the author. Fonda, who also presented RuPaul with his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, says that RuPaul has touched her and millions more by “being who he really is, but finding the best and most powerful version of that person was a journey.” RuPul shares his intimate journey with us with sharp wit and contagious humor so his guide is accessible yet earnest.

RuPaul keeps it real with readers introducing the book by saying “a lot of things you thought to be ‘real’ will be challenged. Basically, prepare for your mind to be blown.” He presents drag as the highest form of being, and the ultimate medium of personal expression. His tone when he speaks of drag is reverent, and he treats the whole process with the great ceremony.

He explains, “When I get all dolled up to film Drag Race, I’ll take six hours. I could do it in two hours, but it’s important for me to make it a deliberately sacred, drawn-out ritual.”  At the same time, he also emphasizes prayer and meditation as essential pillars in shutting down your own ego and loving yourself. RuPaul stresses that balancing outwardly projecting yourself (whether in drag or anything else) as the best version you want to be while keeping introspection and humility at heart is vital to sashaying your way to a happy and successful life.

Just a handful of my favorite of his Ruisms include:

~”Never pass up on an opportunity to wear a fancy outfit, even if you’re the only one who appreciates it.”

~”Doing drag doesn’t change who you are, it actually reveals who you are.”

~”Quick Reminder: Having a fat ass is a good thing.”

~”Quick Reminder: Instead of constantly pointing out what’s missing, celebrate what is.”

All of these and many more Ruisms paint a picture of the colorful personality, and uninhibited creative force that RuPaul brings to any of his ventures.  Both loving and fierce, this book is essential for any fan or individual seeking a unique and powerful voice of guidance.
