A Wrinkle in Time
During the American Music Awards on November 19th, Disney debuted the second trailer for the upcoming movie of Madeleine L’Engle’s A Wrinkle in Time.
Like our first look at the film, this latest trailer highlights the battle of light vs. darkness that young Meg Murry (Storm Reid) is thrust into while trying to find her absent father. This time around, we also get to hear more from Meg herself and see her fantastic brain and heart in action.
A Wrinkle in Time looks aesthetically stunning, and I’m confident that the movie, like the book, will help young girls realize they can be capable heroes like Meg — always a nice change of pace in a media landscape where male protagonists are still the default.
That being said, what excites me the most about these trailers is that they capture the genuine horror at the heart of L’Engle’s story. I was in elementary school when I first read A Wrinkle in Time, and I remember being deeply unsettled by the disappearance of Meg’s dad, and by the foes she faces on her quest to find him. Although the book is often categorized as ‘for children’, I felt as a young reader that the stakes were very adult, which is part of what made the story so compelling and memorable. Judging from the first two trailers, the movie adaptation won’t shirk from the terror at the heart of Meg’s journey.
A Wrinkle in Time is directed by Ava DuVernay (Queen Sugar, Selma, 13th). It stars Gugu Mbatha-Raw and Chris Pine as Meg’s parents; Reese Witherspoon, Mindy Kaling, and Oprah Winfrey as Mrs. Whatsit, Mrs. Who, and Mrs. Which, respectively; and Zach Galifianakis as The Happy Medium.
