What's It About?

It never fails. Every time I start to like a show, it gets canceled. Dear The Blacklist, please don't break my heart.

Shadow Government: Surveillance, Secret Wars, and a Global Security State in a Single-Superpower World by Tom Engelhardt (Haymarket Books, 2014)

shadowgovb

The concept of a shadow government has arisen in The Blacklist. The theory isn’t new; a book titled The Invisible Government came out in 1964 and shocked Americans with its dark world of manipulative intelligence agencies. Now, that not-so-secret government “has grown vastly larger, more disturbing, and far more visible,” according to Tom Engelhardt’s new work. We no longer live in a national security state, but a global security one and secret wars are everywhere.

It’s a perfect read for those who love the subject. How will Reddington take on the Cabal in Season 3?

Snake Skin: A Lucy Guardino FBI Thriller Novel by CJ Lyons (Legacy Books, 2014)

The Blacklist often tackles subject matter that isn’t for everyone; it can be plenty gritty and in-your-face. But if you like that kind of thing, you’ve got to check out the Lucy Guardino FBI thrillers by CJ Lyons. Exploring “the darkness of the human heart and mind,” Snake Skin is a fast-paced thriller that is both authentic and startlingly intense. Lucille Teresa Guardino is a wife and mother, but she also tracks down criminals for the FBI’s Sexual Assault Felony Enforcement squad.

Even though she isn’t a former criminal like Reddington, she’s similar in this way: She’s nobody to be trifled with.

Black List: A Thriller (The Scot Harvath Series) by Brad Thor (Pocket Books, 2013)

blacklistbook

Welcome to the book that predicted the National Security Agency scandal. New York Times bestselling author Brad Thor’s explosive, vibrant thriller centers on a closely guarded list held inside the United States government. Even Members of Congress can’t see it; only the President and a secret team of advisers. If your name is on the list, it’ll stay there until you’re dead. Somehow, counter-terrorism operative Scot Harvath is on that list, and he must find a way to clear his name while evading teams of hit men.

A mystery inside a thrilling adventure, this one is a great summer read, too.
