Independent Bookstores You Need to Visit on a Summer Getaway

in Potpourri by

In a country of big corporations and homogenized megastores, the little shop down the street has become all too rare. Everywhere I go I try to find that bookstore where I can have my own little keepsake; My own memory of the places I’ve been to. Since Memorial Day Weekend is upon us, here are five independent bookstores that you should visit on a long weekend (like this one) or on a summer getaway. Mermaid Books: Williamsburg, VA On a Saturday morning after having a much needed breakfast by the William and Mary campus, I came across Mermaid Books. 4 Books We’re Reading This Memorial Day Weekend

in Fiction by

A vacation read is a very specific type of book. While at home, I’m willing to pick up that 600 page epic fantasy that I know will fill me with plenty of angst and sleepless nights. But when I’m on vacation, I want a book that’s fun, light and that I don’t mind getting sand all over if I feel the need to take a dip in the ocean. Don’t get me wrong: it still needs to be a well-written read, with characters I want to root for, and a storyline that will suck me in. That seems like a lot of words to describe the deliciousness created when meat meets grill, as our friends Grill Daddy and the Big Chill have proven. Yes this…

Operation: Next Chapter is what Memorial Day is all about

in Non-Fiction by

Memorial Day is right around the corner and while you’re relaxing in a patio chair with a loaded hot dog, you might want to reflect on the holiday itself. It exists for a reason. Nobody knows that better than Cym Lowell, author of Jaspar’s War (Rosemary Beach Press, 2014) and the creator of Operation: Next Chapter. Lowell, an international tax attorney and Vietnam veteran, decided to give back to the men and women who have served our country. That’s what Operation: Next Chapter is all about. Lowell donates 100 percent of the proceeds from his books (his newest, Harvest of Gold, comes out this year) to the Soldiers’ Angels Valour-IT program and the Patriot PAWS Service Dogs organization. The former program has raised about $17,000 and donated…
