About Kathleen Harryman

Kathleen Harryman is a storyteller and poet in the historically rich city of York, North Yorkshire, England, with her husband, children and pet dog and cat. Kathleen was first published in 2015, with her debut novel romantic suspense entitled The Other Side of the Looking Glass. Since then, Kathleen has developed a unique writing style that readers have enjoyed, and she became a multi-genre author of suspense, psychological thrillers, poetry and historical romance.

The book that changed your life:

I have read many books across a wide range of genres. The story that has carried me through childhood to adulthood would be Charles Dickens A Christmas Carol.

There are so many different elements to this book and the reader gets a flavour of how we can change our own lives to become a better, kinder person. Ebenezer Scrooge is depicted as a man with no empathy and miserly, but we soon learn how the boy became this man. It is as if all the joy that life brings has been sucked from him. The biggest step Scrooge encounters is to revisit his past and to come to terms with loss, hardship and love. Through the visitation of three spirits he learns to open his heart and by doing so becomes a better man. Three spirits from our past are not there to guide, like Scrooge, we have the opportunity to become better than we are and to learn how to enjoy and appreciate our lives, even during our weaker moments.

A Christmas Carol is an inspirational book that appeals to all ages. It has been a huge influence to me, not only as an author but as a person.

Your favorite literary character:

It is hard to pick one literary character and name them your favourite. If I were to do so, I would say it would be Jane Eyre. It is Jane’s innocence and her strength that gets her through such terrible life obstacles. From the abusive living conditions at her Aunt Reed’s to Lowood School. It isn’t  Jane’s suffering that is the key element to her character, but the fact that she finds love and remains faithful to it. Despite Mr Rochseter’s desperate and selfish acts, Jane is able to forgive him. Her character shows strength, humanity and growth. She a woman of substance.

Trust in yourself, listen to advice without offense, and never forget to be unique. This is your book, your work, let your words be your own and never try to imitate those who inspire you. It is your voice and you alone that will become the inspiration of others.
