DESCRIPTION:

James Grant is the heir to banking fortune and a trust fund baby. The story of his decline and fall is told by his best friend (Misha), the son of a White Russian émigré. They meet at grade school; Misha is insecure because he is surrounded by WASP children and James is insecure because he is from a dysfunctional family and being brought up by a nanny and his uncle. Misha becomes successful but James suffers a series of crises brought on by drink and fecklessness. Misha sticks with his friend who goes downhill with motor car crashes, failed marriage, no career, frustrated hopes, relationships based on his wealth, a term in jail, etc. The story reconstructs the contributing factors within the Grant family and unfolds within the framework of America's "old money" families who no longer have the national status they once had but have retained their glamour and style
