Mr. Charismatic: He's not who you think by Lisa L. Feggans-Odom
How well do you really know a person? That’s an age-old question, renewed in the time of online dating and friend requests on social media. When there’s a screen between two people, there’s plenty someone can hide — but even when they’ve met, more may be hidden beneath the surface.
But popular social media influencer Latavia discovers to a dangerous degree just how much a person can conceal in Mr. Charismatic: He’s not who you think by Lisa L. Feggans-Odom (PPA Creations, LLC).
WHEN SOMETHING’S OFF
There’s a saying that goes, “If it seems like something is off, it probably is,” which Latavia would have benefitted from hearing sooner. Even on the first page of the book, when she receives a friend request from Liam, a stranger, she notices details about his profile picture that do not add up, from the “just so” decor behind him to the strange, out-of-place cat painting. Despite her concerns about him being married or still living with his parents, based on what she can see in that image, she accepts his friend request.
But the irregularities only continue to mount from there: hints of anger and manipulation, unexplainable disappearances, and odd things Latavia wouldn’t have expected to find in Liam’s home. Latavia finds herself questioning who this man really is and what he might be doing when they are not together. It’s only with further investigation, when his stories continue to not add up, and Latavia learns manipulative, interrogative tactics of her own, that she begins to uncover the truth — which very well could be deadly.
TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE
When a relationship is going well, it’s easy to ignore the bad signs, no matter how troubling they may be. Overcome with Liam’s attentiveness, compliments, his physical appearance and frequent physical intimacy, Latavia finds herself trying to quiet the doubts in her mind. Perhaps he was at the wrong place at the wrong time; maybe it was a coincidence; maybe she was reading far too much into the situation. Focusing on the positive aspects of their relationship helps ease her mind, as do Liam’s reassurances that he is the man for her.
But Latavia notices from the very beginning that Liam is a careful man — with his appearance, with his words and turns of phrase, and perhaps even with his home decor. But she too soon realizes that Liam is also careful about his personal alibi: where he is perceived to be, and what he is perceived to be doing, at any given time. Latavia finds this fixation strange at first, but it becomes troubling and even frightening as events close to home occur and murder investigations are discussed.
Feeling too invested in the relationship to leave, Latavia commits to interrogating Liam herself, seeing what details she can pull from him with manipulative phrasing of her own. When she finds herself drawing even closer to him, now for the purpose of getting information, she realizes how dangerous this relationship could be — and how much worse it could be for her if she discovers too much.
THE POWER OF IMAGINATIVE STORYTELLING
In the Preface of her book, Feggans-Odom describes her writing process and how she pushed herself through this project to completion: “Writing is not easy and you need all of the inspiration that you can get. You start, you stop, pick it up, put it down, life happens, you get distracted, you get writer’s block, and then you go again.”
The urgency the author felt for completing her novel comes through in Feggans-Odom’s story, as readers will find the book difficult to put down once they start, with many early readers stating that they had to read the book in one sitting!
With imaginative storytelling, woven with romance, intimacy, murder, investigations and doubt, Mr. Charismatic is an engrossing tale guaranteed to hold readers in suspense, wondering what else could possibly happen, all the way down to the final page.
