An adaptation of Howard Kaplan’s The Damascus Cover has been released 40 years after its initial release, and it is sure making a comeback! Recently, at BookTrib we had the amazing opportunity to speak to Kaplan about his novel and many aspects of its endurance over the years, as well as its journey to the big screen. Now, Howard Kaplan sits down and talks to Sean Tuohy at Writer’s Bone about his book as well as personal snippets from his life.
In this special episode, Howard Kaplan talks about how being a shy kid led to his storytelling and why he wanted his thriller novels to have underlying messages. He also shares his appearance at Boston Film Festival on September 23 to promote the film adaptation of his novel with many familiar faces such as Jonathan Rhys Meyers, John Hurt, and Olivia Thirlby.
Kaplan has a lot to share about his phenomenal life, traveling extensively over the years through Lebanon, Syria, and Egypt, which have always served as inspiration. When he was 21, he was sent into the Soviet Union to smuggle a manuscript on microfilm to London, and his adventures took off from there. After being picked up many years later by the KGB, Kaplan started new ventures in life and went on to receive his BA in Middle East History and an MA in Philosophy of Education. Today, he is the author of four bestselling novels.
