Readers are treated to a charming love story when Ollie reconnects with childhood friend Philly just as his career takes off. As their relationship grows, Philly continually encourages Ollie to pursue opportunities in engineering that eventually lead him to space exploration. As we learn more about Ollie’s life, Talos travels farther into space, increasing the distance between the crew and their loved ones. By day 800 the Earth is but a faint dot in the window of their ship; by day 1104, it’s no longer visible. Unable to communicate with their home planet, the great distance takes an emotional toll on the team. Celestial Lights presents an account of brave men and women pressing into the unknown with the determination that their mission will benefit humanity. It also represents the regret that can come if we choose our ambition over family.
The Unknown—and Its Consequences
When the crew of Talos encounters the mysterious wreckage of a previous expedition, they approach cautiously.
I examined the wreckage again, and my stomach churned. I don’t know if the others felt it, too. Something — someone? — emanating from it, something otherworldly that called to me, drawing me to its orbit.
Curiosity draws them toward the debris of the lost ship, but they must ensure the continuity of their mission to reach the moon of Jupiter. After a number of unnerving discoveries, the crew press forward in their determination to reach Europa. Oliver’s resolve is tested as he begins to wonder if anyone he left behind on Earth will accept him upon his return.
Readers will enjoy Celestial Lights for an emotionally captivating story as well as exceptional writing. Cecile Pin uses descriptive sentences, analogies and symbols to engage the reader. Descriptions of deep space paint a beautiful but lonely picture. Each scene intersects and intermingles with the next in a very effective way.
