Through eight seasons — 101 episodes — and a dozen years, Starz’s adaptation of Diana Gabaldon’s bestselling Outlander series has swept the world up into its universe. This genre-bending show has followed Claire Randall, a World War II combat nurse, as she stumbled through the standing stones at Craigh na Dun, Scotland, in 1945, into the wilds of the 18th-century Scottish Highlands. Her undying love for Scottish Laird Jamie Fraser has been her beacon through clan wars, trips back to the 20th Century and again into the past, being shipwrecked in the Caribbean, and finally to the New World and the battlefields of the Revolutionary War. Along the way, Claire, Jamie and their family have grown, living extraordinary lives during extraordinary times. And now that saga is coming to an end.
Today, Starz premieres the final 10-episode season of Outlander, which promises heartbreak, tears and the discovery of secrets that will tear Fraser’s Ridge apart as the war encroaches upon their haven.
At the end of Season 7, viewers were left wondering whether Faith, Jamie and Claire’s child stillborn in the 1740s, survived. Executive Producer Matthew B. Roberts told Entertainment Weekly, “I didn’t want to make fans wait halfway through the season to get answers,” adding, “That one answer actually spawns about a thousand more questions, and those are what get answered throughout the season.”
Upon Claire and Jamie’s wartime return to Fraser’s Ridge in North Carolina, they discover that their community has changed, as has its leadership. Retired Captain Charles Cunningham has seized control of Fraser’s Ridge in Jamie’s absence. The Frasers will learn to navigate their way in the place they have always called home. The credo throughout the series, that nothing is more important than family, will be tested as secrets come to light, threatening to tear them apart from the inside, while the Revolutionary War threatens them from the outside.
In this final season, the most pressing question on every fan’s mind is whether Jamie will live or die. According to the official Starz trailer, Jamie and Claire’s time-traveling daughter Bree has returned from the 1980s with a book penned by Claire’s first husband, Frank Randall, The Soul of a Rebel: The Scottish Roots of the American Revolution. The book predicts Jamie’s death in an upcoming battle. But despite Claire’s pleadings, Jamie feels compelled to fight for the freedom of his new country. He reckons that if Frank’s words are correct, Claire should return to her own time, to which she replies, “This is my home.” Throughout the series, rumors of Jamie’s death have been reported many times, but how accurate is Frank’s prophecy? And can history be changed? Can Claire and Jamie’s love change history?
Another ghostly burning question has haunted the viewers since the very first season of Outlander. During Claire and Frank’s Inverness honeymoon in 1945, an apparition — “Jamie’s Ghost” — appeared outside Claire’s hotel window. For more than a decade, viewers and readers of the Outlander saga have awaited an explanation about the vision. Did Claire truly see Jamie, or was it her imagination? And can Jamie time-travel, too? Hopefully, the mystery will be solved in Season 8.
For the past seven seasons, Outlander has mostly drawn on the material contained in Gabaldon’s series, and Season 8 will draw from her latest, the ninth, Go Tell the Bees That I Am Gone. However, Gabaldon’s tenth and final Outlander book, A Blessing for a Warrior Going Out, is in the process of being written, leaving the series concluding ahead of its source material. Executive Producer Maril Davis noted to the Radio Times, “Once again, it won’t be Diana’s ending for us, for the show. It’s sad regardless, it’s very bittersweet, but I’m really excited about it.”
At the Outlander Season 8 Premiere: The Final Gathering in New York City, Producer Roberts said that they “wanted to make this final season authentic to the story, just another chapter in the beloved series … and an emotional ride like no other.” He noted that the writers, actors and crew knew the show held a special meaning for their fans. “They gave us their hearts, so you have to give a little of yours back.”
As we bid a fond farewell to Jamie and Claire, we wonder whether they will have their happy ending. Or will we, the loyal viewers? To find out, tune into Starz tonight … and don’t forget to bring the hankies!
