Nobody's Legend by Jason Ferguson

A rousing autobiography and a road map toward mental and spiritual rejuvenation.

With Nobody’s Legend: Let Go of Who You Were, Rewrite Your Story and Take Back Your Life, Jason Ferguson has written a comeback story, tracing his path from aspiring football star to desperate addict to a rehabilitated and motivated man willing to share his way forward with others.

His memoir is a moving tale of resilience, love and second chances. It’s also full of inspiring and useful insights for others who are struggling to overcome obstacles in their lives.

Determined to Make It to the Top

The impact of seeing a college football game at USC as a kid left a lingering impression on Jason’s mind. As he watched the collegiate athletes on the gridiron, seeing their numbers worshipped and hearing their names chanted, Jason saw the potential for his own future.

While he might not have been large in stature, standing at a little over five feet and weighing 125 pounds, his determination and desire gave him the boost needed to overcome these potential limitations. He just needed the right coach to guide him along the way. Coach Cox would be the first of many individuals in Jason’s life who saw the best in him and nurtured his talents.

Jason would play Running Back for the Junior Varsity squad at Fairfax High School, where his speed and agility in avoiding tackles earned him the nickname “The Rabbit.” Despite the rushing yards he was piling up, along with the touchdowns he scored, he carried the weight of the team’s losses. Soon, Coach Cox felt that Jason’s leadership and talent were deserving of a promotion to the varsity team.

Obsession, coupled with purpose, had brought him to a pivotal moment in his life where he could write his ticket and find himself on a Division I Football team with the hopes of a bright future. However, fate is a cruel mistress, and a torn ACL during a training camp left him on the bench during senior year.

A Star Plummets to Rock Bottom

Jason was not one to go down without a fight, so he began the arduous effort of rehabilitation in order to get back on the field. Losing out on playing during his senior year was discouraging, especially since he enjoyed sharing the field with his teammates. Moving from player to spectator also negatively affected his chances of being recruited by any of the top football programs.

However, a chance recruiting visit by the University of Hawaii football coach emboldened Jason to sell the coach on his talent. The coach was impressed by Jason’s highlight reel and offered him a scholarship.

The dream of being a breakout player at the University of Hawaii was tragically cut short, however, with another injury. Giving up on a dream wasn’t easy, and Jason found a way to numb both the physical and emotional pain.

His descent into OxyContin addiction was gradual and devastating, as the amount of pills needed to assuage the pain was never enough. Jason would battle addiction, both in Hawaii and later back home in California, until the effects of his habit led to his betrayal of family and friends. As he hit his rock bottom, the unconditional love of his family finally drove him to seek help.

The Ultimate Comeback Story

As Jason relates these highs and lows of his life experience, he provides inspiring insight to others, such as staying true to oneself (being authentic) and appreciating what you have and why it’s enough (a concept he and his teammates dubbed “Danza,” after abbondanza, the Italian word for abundance).

One of the hardest lessons he had to learn in life, though, was acceptance. He had to accept what he couldn’t change: the injury to his knee; at the same time, he had to face something he could change: his addiction. Addiction proved a tough obstacle to overcome, but Jason has remained sober because of a strong will and the continued support of his family, which is a theme that is predominant throughout Jason’s book.

Jason’s “superpower” is perseverance, whether it be in his quest to be the best football player in high school, getting back in the game after setbacks or overcoming a potentially deadly dependency.

For all his initial struggles, Jason eventually became a successful salesman for various tech companies. He didn’t let initial rejections deter him; he kept applying and sold himself with each interview. The same self-motivation and determination that served him so well as an athlete paid off in his career.

Jason possesses the gift of a natural storyteller and writes in an engaging, conversational way. His narrative flows seamlessly, and readers find themselves hanging on every word. This is a book that will appeal to those needing direction in life, as well as anyone who enjoys an uplifting story. Frank and full of heart, Nobody’s Legend is both a rousing autobiography and a road map toward mental and spiritual rejuvenation.
