Q: What inspired you to write Langston Mangston’s Cool-Le-Made Adventure?

A: The inspiration behind Langston Mangston’s Cool-Le-Made Adventure stemmed from my childhood desire to start a business. Recognizing the lack of discussions about business and finance in many Black households, coupled with the unfortunate reality of talented youth succumbing to negative environments, I felt compelled to create a narrative that instills the entrepreneurial spirit in young minds while encouraging familial dialogue on financial literacy. This book serves as a beacon of hope, inspiring both children and parents to embrace the possibilities of small business and cultivate a brighter financial future together.

Q: Does this story draw on any experiences from your own childhood?

A: Absolutely. Langston Mangston’s Cool-Le-Made Adventure draws heavily from my own childhood experiences. While the story revolves around my son Langston and his entrepreneurial journey, the adventures and challenges he faces are reminiscent of my own endeavors, like starting a Kool-Aid stand as a child. I vividly recall the joy of serving the community juxtaposed with the occasional headaches, such as running out of supplies or facing parental concerns. It’s a reflection of how even seemingly innocent ventures can encounter obstacles, teaching valuable lessons along the way.

Q: What inspired these characters?

A: The characters in Langston-Mangston’s Cool-Le-Made Adventure are inspired by a blend of personal experiences and societal observations. Langston-Mangston embodies the entrepreneurial spirit inherent in all children, particularly my son Langston and myself. Zonky symbolizes the unspoken realities in Black households, especially regarding business and financial literacy. The Mom and Dad represent resilient, two-parent households often overlooked in the media. Mr. Tiller signifies community support, reminiscent of the neighborly bonds we share. Each character reflects a facet of childhood, family dynamics and community resilience, aiming to inspire and uplift readers of all backgrounds.

Q: How important is it for children to learn financial literacy at a young age?

A: It’s crucial for children to learn financial literacy early on. Having worked in finance and entrepreneurship, I’ve seen firsthand the gap in education surrounding money matters. Many express regret for not learning these skills sooner. By introducing basic financial concepts in childhood, we empower young adults to navigate their financial futures with confidence. Neglecting this education can have serious consequences, especially in communities where financial discussions are often sidelined. Imagine a young athlete entering the professional world without financial literacy. It’s time we prioritize financial education in all households, ensuring our children are equipped for success from the start.

Q: Does this story have any messages for parents to learn alongside their children?

A: Absolutely. While Langston-Mangston’s Cool-Le-Made Adventure is primarily aimed at children, its messages extend to parents as well. Just like how cartoons or Disney movies often contain hidden jokes for adults, this book serves as a catalyst for family discussions on business and finances. It encourages parents to engage with their children on these topics, even if they initially feel uncomfortable. By learning alongside their children, parents can foster a supportive environment where financial literacy becomes a natural part of everyday conversation, empowering the entire family for a brighter future.

Q: What main lessons do you hope young readers will take away from this?

A: The main lessons I hope young readers take away from Langston-Mangston’s Cool-Le-Made Adventure are twofold. Firstly, I aim to break the barrier of what topics are deemed “too difficult” for children by encouraging open discussions about business and finance within families. By doing so, we empower children to make informed choices and avoid negative influences from their surroundings. Secondly, I hope to instill a sense of curiosity and enjoyment in children when it comes to business and finance, reminding them that learning can be fun and lighthearted. Ultimately, I wish for all readers to embrace these lessons and lead fulfilling lives.
