The Paradise Problem by Christina Lauren

An Unlikely Duo

In The Paradise Problem, we meet Anna Green, an art student who finds peace through painting. Then there’s Liam “West” Weston, who becomes Anna’s husband so they can both save money, acquiring affordable family housing while they study at UCLA. Once graduation rolls around, Liam leaves and Anna waves goodbye to him after signing what she thought were divorce papers.

The story fast-forwards to three years later. Anna is struggling, trying to make ends meet and provide money for her sick father’s hospital bills. She is working at a grocery store and is managed by a young boss, who fires her over a small infraction and her simple “no” to his request that she go on a date with him. Anna finds herself having the “worst day ever” as she trudges home, defeated and wondering how she can pick herself back up again. 

Little does she know that Liam, now a well-known young professor, is about to enter the picture, knocking on her door and offering her monetary compensation to attend his sister’s wedding alongside his rich and judgmental family. 

It turns out, they were never divorced. His family thinks she’s still his wife, and is eager to meet her as his wedding date. Anna had no idea he was wealthy and is surprised by the offer. She ultimately accepts the money in hopes that she can pick herself back up after being unemployed and depressed. And this just might cover her dad’s hospital bills and doctor’s visits.

Readers will love Anna and Liam’s banter. One of the best parts of the novel is when Anna is forced to undergo a makeover to look “suitable” to meet Liam’s family, yet she keeps her signature pink hair. Anna’s free-spirited vibe is great alongside Liam’s more serious demeanor. It’s fun to follow them as they learn that status and class should not define a person, nor be used as a target to put others down. Opposites do more than attract — they change each other’s lives and perspectives.

Lessons on Love and Status

Christina Lauren’s The Paradise Problem is quite possibly one of their most emotional and charming novels to date. The book does not shy away from extracting readers’ laughter, and might also make them shed a tear or two.

The characters’ love story is adorable — a bit of a slow burn — and fits perfectly with the story’s progression. Readers will feel like they are attending the wedding while feeling the characters’ emotions, making it extremely touching as the characters get to know each other better and grow closer.

The Paradise Problem is a relatable tale about discovering oneself, finding love when you least expect it, and the struggles and growth that come with defying societal norms and expectations of status-based relationships. This a great story that will stay with you always and make you hungry for more books from this iconic writing duo.
