Go: Living Wisdom for Those Willing to Live by Shyan Selah

GO read this book — and spring into hope, confidence and action.

“The goal itself never moves. It just waits until you make enough moves to get to it.”

In other words, you have to GO.

There are business books, there are self-help books and there are inspirational books, all full of strategies and roadmaps beating readers over the head to attain some level of achievement and success. Yet with its simplicity of form and dynamic presentation of 187 quick ideas and thoughts, GO: Living Wisdom for Those Willing to Live by Shyan Selah is as spot-on, relevant and motivating as many of the traditional messages we’ve come to accept.

Daily Support Tool for People Struggling to Get Going

If there’s one overriding takeaway from this collection of snappy wisdom and quotes, it’s to “GO” — go and do something, do anything, take action, don’t stand on the sidelines, start your journey now (don’t wait), and have the courage to change, improve, live and flourish.

“No matter the goal, no matter the level of talent you have, no matter your background, no matter what odds are in your favor or against you, nothing will change until you make a move,” says Selah, a multi-talented creative artist and entrepreneur.

The book is positioned as a daily support tool for people who are struggling or seeking a much-needed spark to get going. While it would seem logical to read one quote a day, play with it, let it sink in, and allow its message to help define your next 24 hours, I believe readers would be hard-pressed to stop with only one a day and not peek around the corner at the next page. For me, it was like eating a bag of potato chips — I couldn’t stop. Wisdom tastes like that.

Your Speed Doesn’t Matter — Just Move!

Selah’s suggestions and counsel are all over the map. His opening quote makes reference to a baby whose noise level of crying gets your attention. So “make noise,” he declares.

Many of the passages are easily relatable to your own experiences. One quote in particular struck home for me: “Learn all you can and learn from the best because it is a pain to have to unlearn what you’ve been wrongly taught.” For me, I watch young golfers exhibit perfect form, and then I look at mine — unfortunately, it’s too late for me to unlearn everything with all my bad habits and start again.

Or to paraphrase the famous “slow and steady wins the race,” Selah agrees, “Don’t worry about going slow, just as long as you’re going.”

GO Read This Book

With the author’s many interests and accomplishments, it is clear that he is speaking from the voice of a doer himself and trying to motivate the rest of us to follow in that spirit. It’s about having a purpose and also a plan, about being brave enough to try and fail rather than not try at all. And stay within yourself, be yourself, celebrate the joys that you represent, and use those joys to help reach your goals. Above all, don’t be afraid.

The author points to the initial failures of many — great iconic athletes, for example, who were cut from their high school teams. But they never quit. Or concepts that are part of our daily lives (like bottled water) but at one point were regarded as a revolutionary act.

“Every car on the road, every tractor in the field, every plane in the sky, every building in the city, every phone in your hand was made possible because somebody decided to GO and do the necessary work for it to be created.”

There you have it. GO read this book — and spring into hope, confidence and action.
