Functional Architecture of the Human Mental by Joseph J. Jean-Claude and Caroline Stamu-O'Brien

About 8.3 million adult Americans suffer from serious psychological distress. That’s 3.4 percent of the U.S. population. Perhaps you know one of them. Perhaps you are one of them.

If you fit into one of the categories of depression, anxiety, mania or caring for a close one with psychosis, there’s no doubt that professional help is a large part of the solution. It’s also possible you have tapped into numerous self-help books with various theories and strategies about what you are feeling and facing, and how to cope.

There’s another book you likely haven’t heard of that can supplement, or even serve as the basis for, learning about and treating these conditions and many more. Referred to as “a reference psychophysics treatise of human mentation and its disorders,” the book is entitled Functional Architecture of the Human Mental by Joseph J. Jean-Claude and Caroline Stamu-O’Brien. Even if readers are not familiar with it, the book sits in the collections at Harvard, Cambridge, Oxford and Universite de Paris.

The book’s title might sound like a mouthful — because it is! It is the consummate volume and reference book dissecting and understanding every mental and human condition — a current and comprehensive critical resource for clinical practice and beyond.

The authors explain that this massive work exposes several decades of mathematical-physics research in human emotions, cognition, behavior, personality and psychiatric diagnostic entities. In essence, it provides a new understanding of the human mind from an exacting psychophysics vantage.

“If you are struggling with depression, anxiety, mania or caring for a close one with psychosis,” says co-author Caroline Stamu-O’Brien, “this book offers a new angle on mental disorders while at the same time complementing the well-known Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Psychiatric Disorders (DSM-5).

This monograph, which is the result of several decades of parsimonious and broad research in the mentation sciences, brings a rigorous mathematical-physics framework to the understanding and interpretation of human cognitive entities and transactions, vectors of normal behavior, the formation and typification of human characters, as well as the dysfunctional trends and etiological categories of the qualified Disorders of Mind. The authors have taken special care in a simple and appropriate formulation of the analytic and differential geometry inherent to the exegetic framework to make it amenable to all humanists of the field.

A New Approach to Discussing Psychology in the Written Word

Anchored in extensive clinical psychiatric literature and research as well as rigorous numeric logic, it is a pointed departure from typical speculative exposition around psychodynamic problems. The neuroanatomist and neuroscientist will get to delve into the invisible and novel Quanto-Geometric framework of the human mind. To the clinical psychologist and psychiatrist, this treatise also firmly captures the very elusive elements that traditionally escape the subtle currents of diagnostic classification of their interest.

Do not expect to read Functional Architecture of the Human Mental from start to finish or cover to cover. The reader might be advised to grasp the introduction and then pick and choose a topic of interest, concern or personal relevance. Readers will find a vast, diverse array of coverage in areas such as human sexuality, foundations of the human mental, the different types of personalities, diagnosis of every psychogenic disorder, learning disorders, insomnia, stuttering, hysteria — topics large and small and far too many to mention.

The overall information contained will prove valuable not only to physicians and most other mental health professionals and patient advocates, but lay readers with curiosity about cognition, behavior and characterology in general. You’ll find it to be a most empowering resource to satisfy intellectual curiosity and expand clinical understanding of our minds.

“Our ambition with this new reference treatise,” says Jean-Claude, “is to help overcome the current impasse in psychiatric science, and provide the clinical community one more tool for its arsenal in the task of unraveling and probing the depths of the Human Mental.”
