MORE BOOK NEWS

We’re starting off strong this week with some gossip coming from the publishing world. 250 members of the HarperCollins union went on strike last month after contract negotiations between workers and the publisher failed. The union is demanding “higher pay, a greater commitment to diversifying staff and stronger union protection.” In support of this, author Monica Wood, known for her memoir, When We Were the Kennedys, has stopped working on her next novel, How To Read a Book.

In happier news, according to Bridge Michigan, Andy and Tracie Wierda — a Michigan couple — has donated $100,000 to a library that was defunded by voters after it refused to remove LGBTQ+ books from its shelves. In August, romance author Nora Roberts donated $50,000 to the library.

We’re back to reporting about book bans this week. *sigh* KUER-FM reported that a school district in Utah has decided to permanently ban 22 books from its libraries! The list of removed books includes Maia Kobabe’s graphic memoir Gender Queer, George M. Johnson’s All Boys Aren’t Blue, Jonathan Evison’s Lawn Boy and Juno Dawson’s This Book Is Gay. The Utah list also includes all five books in Sarah J. Maas’ series, A Court of Thorns and Roses, as well as Ashley Hope Perez’s Out of Darkness, Lauren Myracle’s TTYL and Jennifer Niven’s Breathless.

On to something worth celebrating … The Library of Congress will celebrate Jason Reynolds’ (Long Way Down and All American Boys) tenure as National Ambassador for Young People’s Literature with a closing celebration next week. The closing ceremony will be held on Dec. 13 and livestreamed on YouTube.
