Cryptocurrency has been one of the most hotly debated topics of the modern era. Although a digital currency, to be an alternative form of payment created using encryption algorithms sounds brilliant in theory, in practice examples such as bitcoin, NFTs and other currencies have proved volatile, susceptible to manipulation and suffer from a lack of scalability. These flaws, combined with the crypto’s complexity and fact that it has only been around for the last decade, have made it a hard sell for the wider population.
The complexity in particular is a hurdle for those without a background in economics or computer science. The best aspect of this book is how comprehensively the author covers the building blocks of a proper understanding of crypto. From the very first page, the author makes an excellent point in this regard:
“This book contains the basic definitions necessary to understand Bitcoin. They are not in alphabetical order. Instead they are in the sequence needed to build understand for the later definitions.” Says the author. “If you were to try to teach a beginning student of addition that 4+2=6 without first teaching them the meaning of the symbols + and =, the student would never understand arithmetic. It’s a matter of sequence. You have to first learn the words and symbols to understand the basic ideas. Then with the basic ideas understood, you can know the subject.”
Instead of just throwing technical definitions and esoteric words at us like most explanations, Uncle Crypto makes sure to cover each basic component, so that by the time we reach the meat of the subject, we have a proper foundation. Although the basic concepts of money and exchange are something I already understood, the way the author uses this foundation to explain Bitcoin and crypto is extremely effective.
HELPS CREATE A SOLID ECONOMIC FOUNDATION
Another feature I greatly appreciated is that this guide is easily readable and is very conscious when it comes to providing too much information at once. Everyone has had the experience of reading a textbook in school — knowing that while it certainly contains everything we needed to know for the test, it is hidden within massive walls of text and complex technical jargon. In this guide, Uncle Crypto takes his time, explaining exactly what we need to know, nothing more or less, on each page. There is no clutter from words or pictures, and each visual presented clearly adds to what is being elucidated on the page.
By the end of the guide, I was significantly more confident in my understanding of cryptocurrency, Bitcoin and how these both interact with the micro and macroeconomy. Not only will I be able to participate in discussions about these subjects, this new understanding has also made me more financially literate, and has opened my eyes to previously unexplored avenues that I may decide to turn to in the future. Who knows, next time I put money into my Roth IRA, maybe I’ll set some aside for Bitcoin as well.
