Storm Surge

John F. Banas’ debut, Storm Surge, is a suspense thriller set amid Hurricane Katrina, about a woman, her husband, and her ex-fiance on a mission to rescue her daughter. It’s a tightly wound tale of hidden intentions, closets full of skeletons, professional hitmen, and — of course — one ferocious storm.

BookTrib’s editorial director, Jim Alkon, chatted with Banas to discuss his first encounter with thrillers at the age of eight, authors like James Patterson that inspire his writing, and a moment that made him ask “what if?” and inspired this novel. Part of what John Banas loves about writing thrillers is that you can introduce characters, “and then rough them up,” so they have to become better than they ever thought they could be.
