NEWS FROM THE BOOK WORLD

We can’t seem to get away from book’s being banned or, in this case, “reviewed”, it seems. According to Hartfort Courant, a children’s book titled Who Is RuPaul?, which is written by Nico Medina and illustrated by Andrew Thomson, and revolves around the drag queen and TV personality, RuPaul Charles, has been removed in a town library in Connecticut.

Taylor Swift has released a new single based on Delia Owens’ novel Where the Crawdads Sing, according to Entertainment Weekly! “Carolina” was released on Friday and is featured on the soundtrack to the film adaptation, which is slated for release on July 15.

In book-to-screen news, Hunter Schafer has been cast as Tigris, a cousin of Coriolanus Snow, who grows up to be the villain in the main Hunger Games novels, in The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, and Jason Schwartzman will star as Lucretius “Lucky” Flickerman, the host of the games! Deadline also reported that screenwriter Abi Morgan will write and direct a television adaptation of her book This Is Not a Pity Memoir. Last, but certainly not least, Paramount released a teaser trailer of the upcoming film adaptation of Angie Thomas’ young adult novel On the Come Up. Check it out:

AWARDS AND ACCOLADES WORTHY OF NOTE

The Community of Literary Magazines & Presses (CLMP) revealed the winners of its annual Firecracker Awards, given to the best books and literary magazines published by independent presses. A hearty congratulations goes out to Allison Cobb, Celeste Mohammed, and Truong Tran. In other award news, the winners of the annual Boston Globe–Horn Book Awards, which “celebrate excellence in children’s and young adult literature,” were announced. The winners include Jason Reynolds, Jason Griffin, Sabaa Tahir, and Brandy Colbert. The Strand Magazine also announced a star-studded lineup in their 2022 Strand Critics Awards nominations!

Ashley Poston’s The Dead Romantics is the newest pick for the Good Morning America book club.

Nikki Erlick’s The Measure is the latest pick for Jenna Bush Hager’s Today show book club.

The memoir by whistleblower Chelsea Manning, titled README.txt will be released this fall by Farrar, Straus and Giroux. In case you don’t know who Chelsea Manning is: Back in 2010, while working as an Army intelligence analyst, she made international headlines after leaking 720,000 classified military documents to WikiLeaks and was subsequently convicted in 2013 of theft and espionage.

Nomadland author, Jessica Bruder, is said to tackle the future of abortion rights in her next book, which will be published by W.W. Norton. Bruder’s upcoming book is allegedly based on her Atlantic article “The Future of Abortion in a Post-Roe America.”

The story of the Starbucks union drive will be told by one of the Buffalo, New York, baristas who helped organize it. Jaz Brisack’s book, titled Get on the Job and Organize will be published in the spring of 2024.
