Hello, Book Lovers! It’s a brand-new week and The Pulse has some interesting book and industry gossip to share with readers. We’re talking publishers protesting in France, bestsellers being optioned, and even a Def Leppard oral history book! That’s right, BookTrib’s left no stone unturned this week.
STANDOUT READS BOOKTRIB’S DISCUSSING
The House Across the Lake by Riley Sager: “An explosive, mind-bending, chilling summer read to add to your list, run, don’t walk, to the nearest bookstore or library and pick up a copy.”
Almost a Serial Killer by Margaret Lashley: “If you’re looking for some intrigue and suspense mixed with a big helping of situational humor, pack a copy of Lashley’s latest in your beach bag; this just might be your favorite read of the summer.”
The Theory of Irv by Greg Vigdor: “You’ll come away with a deeper understanding of the importance, and the complexities of health care reform.”
NEWS FROM THE BOOK WORLD
We’re starting off strong this week with some book news from France. According to reports, French publishers are protesting Vivendi’s Lagardère Group takeover, which would see the merging of French book publishing leaders, Hatchette Livre and Editis. So far, five of its star authors have left and some speculation suggests that more authors will follow suit.
BookTrib is excited to report that The New York Public Library is giving away 500,000 books for children and teenagers to New Yorkers this summer! If that’s not enough, the books on offer will include ones in Spanish and Chinese, as well as large-print editions. Bravo!
As for book-to-screen adaptations: Emma Straub’s New York Times bestselling novel This Time Tomorrow has been optioned by Lionsgate and it’s been reported that Jason Moore (perhaps best known as the director of Pitch Perfect) is set to direct! In other news, a film based on Katie Lee Biegel’s novel, Groundswell, is coming to the Hallmark Channel in August. Lacey Chabert and Ektor Rivera will play the lead roles in the film. BookTrib has further learned that PBS will be bringing a limited series based on Gill Hornby’s Miss Austen to the small screen and that Tomorrow Studios is adapting Claire Vaye Watkins’ I Love You but I’ve Chosen Darkness!
AWARDS AND ACCOLADES WORTHY OF NOTE
Debut novelist Ann Shin has won the Trillium Book Award for her novel, The Last Exiles, at the 35th anniversary edition of the prize geared to honoring Ontario writers. Ntsika Kota has been named overall winner of this year’s £5,000 Commonwealth Short Story Prize, chosen from a pool of nearly 7,000 global entrants with his story “and the earth drank deep”. Malorie Blackman has been awarded the 2022 PEN Pinter Prize, becoming the first children’s and YA author to win the award since it was first given out in 2009.
MORE BOOKS THE MEDIA’S BUZZING ABOUT
Yahoo! reported that the members of Def Leppard will tell the story of their band in a new oral history book, Definitely: The Official Story of Def Leppard with the U.K. press Genesis Publications.
According to Vogue, One World will publish a book posthumously by Virgil Abloh, the iconic fashion designer who died last year, titled Work in Progress, which is co-written with editor Anja Aronowsky Cronberg.
RBmedia announced that it’s acquired the exclusive audio rights for the debut young adult fantasy novel from author and TikTok sensation Alex Aster, titled Lightlark.
Last, but certainly not least, Bloomsbury has won a seven-way auction for You Don’t Know What War Is: The Diary of a Young Girl From Ukraine, written by 12-year-old Yeva Skalietska.
