Hello, Book Lovers! This week’s The Pulse has everything from Holly Black signing up to write a brand-new duology to two previously unreleased Shirley Jackson stories finally making an appearance in print! As for drama in the book world … well, Russian authorities have their eyes on an author and there’s a plagiarism apology coming from “Down Under.” We’ve got all the juicy deets to share with you, so without further ado, let’s get to this week’s highlights.

STANDOUT READS BOOKTRIB’S DISCUSSING

The Last Mile by Kat Martin: “This romantic thriller has all the hallmarks of a great summer read: fast-moving and fun with equal amounts of sexual tension and suspense.”

Gut Feelings: The Patient’s Story: “A hopeful sequel that will help you start on your own journey from suffering toward healing.”

Last Call at the Nightingale: “a world unto itself. If you love jazz, flappers, bootleg whiskey, the Charleston — iconic images of the Roaring Twenties — you’ll love this book.”

NEWS FROM THE BOOK WORLD

Two previously unreleased stories by Shirley Jackson, “Charlie Roberts” and “Only Stand and Wait,” were published this week in the summer issue of The Strand Magazine.

Some interesting news was released for iOS owners this past week. Artsy cofounder launched Tertulia, a free discovery app for books with integrated purchasing, shipping, and community ownership, on iOS. According to reports, Tertulia allows readers to see what books are being discussed across the web and helps them pick their next read.

It’s been a bit quiet in Hollywood, apart from Creatd recently announcing a few projects of note, including the re-release and film adaptation of No One’s Pet: The Autobiography of Sheila Kennedy, Vocal Creators’ Fiction Anthology, and the production and release of Larry Blamire’s steampunk graphic novel, Steam Wars.

Popular Russian science-fiction author Dmitry Glukhovsky has been added to a wanted list by the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia. Apparently, the writer is being charged with committing a crime under Article 280.3 (‘Public actions aimed at discrediting the use of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation’) of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation. If convicted, Dmitry Glukhovsky could be sentenced to 15 years in prison.

Australian author John Hughes has apologized for unintentionally plagiarizing parts of Svetlana Alexievich’s The Unwomanly Face of War, a Nobel laureate, after The Guardian Australia found multiple similarities and some identical instances in his new novel, which has been nominated for Australia’s most prestigious literary prize.

AWARDS AND ACCOLADES WORTHY OF NOTE

A hearty applause goes out to S.A. Cosby, Amanda Jayatissa, Courtney Summers, E.J. Findorff and Scott Loring Sanders, who were named the winners of the International Thriller Writers’ Thriller Awards on Sunday. Frederick Forsyth and Diana Gabaldon were also honored at the ceremony as this year’s “ThrillerMasters.” In other award news, Kalynn Bayron was announced as the winner of the 2022 Randall Kenan Prize for Black LGBTQ Fiction by the Lambda Literary Foundation. Whoohoo! News also emerged that the 2022 PEN America Emerging Voices Fellows have been announced. Congratulations to Natáhne Arrowsmith, S. Erin Batiste, Sarah Chaves, Julian Iralu, Iris Kim, Jane S. Kim, Monica Mills, Doreen Oliver, Connie Pertuz-Meza, Edythe Rodriguez, Shakeema Smalls and Christina Tudor!

MORE BOOKS THE MEDIA’S BUZZING ABOUT

The Associated Press reported that Sen. Raphael G. Warnock will make his children’s literature debut this fall with an inspirational picture book titled, Put On Your Shoes And Get Ready!
