Where, Oh Where, Is Barnaby Bear?

Barnaby’s friends can’t find him anywhere. Not in his usual haunts around the island of Nantucket. Not even in the most far-flung places and situations they can imagine this adventuresome bear exploring. Where, oh where, can he be?

Where, Oh Where, Is Barnaby Bear? (Andrews McMeel Publishing) by Wendy Rouillard is a precious and inspiring story of how, with a little imagination and a brave and curious spirit, children can travel anywhere they wish!

The opening page to this picture book for children ages 1 to 4 introduces us to a miniature search party of Barnaby’s closest friends — a giraffe, frog, pig, bird and dog — who can’t seem to locate their sightseeing sidekick. Equipped with flashlights, they set out to find Barnaby, bringing readers along with them.

Barnaby is a teddy bear with an affinity for exploration who is always decked out in his signature monogrammed red cap. In this tale, he sails the high seas, sits down for afternoon tea, and even has a brief stint as a pilot. We travel through Barnaby’s world thanks to Pedro Martin’s beautiful, brightly-colored illustrations that make the reader feel as though they are riding as a passenger in his plane or fishing alongside him on a dock.

Barnaby is undoubtedly adorable and his irresistible mug is perfectly complemented by animated worms, crabs, birds and plenty of other friends that accompany him on his travels. Even the moon bears a smile as Barnaby whizzes by on his rocket ship!

After a series of daylong escapades, Barnaby is found tucked cozily in bed. With his friends beside him, Barnaby dozes off to sleep, likely dreaming of his next big adventure.

Children with a knack for such adventure will love this short story and enjoy following Barnaby as he trots from place to place, engaging in a fun, new activity in each. His joy for life encourages every child to explore their surroundings and pursue awesome experiences, just like he does. Barnaby proves that any day can be a journey beyond your wildest dreams.

Children and adults alike will love this adorable story. In just 17 pages, readers step into Barnaby’s world and ride shotgun next to him as he travels to places and engages in activities that span the everyday to the fantastical. At the end, he drifts off to sleep, allowing this book to serve as the perfect bedtime story for your little reader, as well!

About Wendy Rouillard:

Barnaby the Bear is real! “Barnaby” was a stuffed bear that first belonged to Wendy’s grandmother, and then, a generation later, her mother. He was well-worn and tattered with a few little holes by the time her mother gave him to her. She held his hand on the first day of school and he was a frequent visitor at “show and tell.”

Years later, while the author was a student at Parsons School of Design in New York City, she discovered Nantucket and fell in love with the Island. She decided to combine her love of writing and drawing and create a book about Barnaby, a Nantucket Bear.

That is how it all began!

20 years later, she is still living on the Island, creating new adventures about Barnaby and raising two young girls, Annecy and Ondine.

The Barnaby Bear adventures are created from the author’s own childhood memories and they draw from the simpler things in life.
