To say that former teacher and chaplain Kitty O’Meara is the author of a viral poem feels like a bit of a pun, seeing as that poem is about life during our viral times. O Magazine called her the “poet laureate of the pandemic” after her poem “And the People Stayed Home” blew up on social media this past spring. And now that poem is a picture book for children with a hopeful message for young and old.
The poem had humble beginnings. It took O’Meara around 20 minutes to write. She shared it with her friends on Facebook. And they shared it with others. And so on and so on. Millions have now been comforted by the poem’s calm assessment of how our lives and our world can be healed by this time of solitude and introspection.
Join us today at noon EST on our Facebook page when we chat with O’Meara to learn more about how the poem came to be, and how it got to be where it is now, in the hands of children everywhere in the form of a beautiful picture book.
