Matthew Hickson

Coming-of-Age Fiction

Music teacher and author of Walking Among Birds

 width=

Matthew Hickson was born at such a young age that he can hardly even remember it. According to his parents, it was in 1991 and it was messy. He has had a very interesting life so far trying many different things including engineering, geology, and music. He now teaches music full-time at a school in Perth (the Australian one, not Scotland). His biggest fear is the staff room running out of coffee and when he grows up he would like to be a professional taste tester at a chocolate factory. Matthew has always had a very vivid imagination – so much so that he imagines daily that his life is in working order and that he’s a productive human being.

BOOKS:

Walking Among Birds (2019)

Your biggest literary influences:

F. Scott Fitzgerald, C.S. Lewis, and Charles Dickens

Last book read:

Lord of the Flies by William Golding

The book that changed your life:

I read Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events in my youth and this really got me into reading. The series of books inspired me and I haven’t looked back since!

Your favorite literary character:

Baba from Khaled Hosseini’s The Kite Runner. He is such a complex character who lives by his own moral code through all the changes and perturbations in the world around him. He has many layers about him and really demonstrates the depth and gravitas that authors can give their characters.

Currently working on:

Thinking about writing another book … not quite sure what it will be about yet.

Words to live by:

“Reserving judgments is a matter of infinite hope.” (F. Scott Fitzgerald)

Advice for aspiring authors:

Just do it! Get that manuscript started (I found this to be the biggest hurdle), and once you start it’s hard to stop.
