A devastating childhood betrayal, an undercover reporter who is in too deep, a beautiful sailboat on the Chesapeake Bay, a rich and powerful family, and an ice pick that is not used for ice — these five elements come together in Hank Phillippi Ryan’s explosive new release, The First to Lie. We were fortunate enough to have author Casey Barrett sit down with Hank for a thrilling conversation about her undercover work as an investigative journalist and the ways in which those years of experience influenced her novel.

The two authors discussed the the book’s exploration of identity: “We’re all only who we say we are. Everyone’s hiding something. Everyone’s undercover, struggling to be who they want to be in public and only being themselves when alone.” And Hank explained the ways in which the novel was designed to foster discussion surrounding certain topics without passing judgment, leaving the readers to consider the facts and make their own decisions about their implications.
