Though she earned degrees in math and statistics, Leah Garriott lives for a good love story. She’s resided in Hawaii and Italy, walked the countryside of England, and owns every mainstream movie version of Pride and Prejudice. She’s currently living her own happily ever after in Utah with her husband and three kids.

BOOKS:

Promised (2020)

Biggest literary influences:

Jane Austen, Bronte Sisters, Sir Walter Scott, Wallace Stegner

Last book read:

The Great Alone by Kristin Hannah

The book that changed your life:

Ivanhoe by Sir Walter Scott, which I read as a teenager. Ivanhoe as a character didn’t affect me much, but the passion of Sir Brian de Bois-Guilbert for Rebecca captured me. His all-consuming need for her awakened me to how words can evoke real and lasting emotion in a reader; generating such emotion is now a goal with my own writing.

Favorite literary character:

Rosencrantz and Guildenstern (because the two are really inseparable) as portrayed in Tom Stoppard’s play Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead. They are witty and intelligent and side characters in someone else’s story without realizing it. Their tale is a great, tragic lesson on the saying that every character is the hero of their own story, and helps remind me that side characters are “real” people too.

Currently working on:

Another historical romance, a companion book to Promised.

Words to live by:

“Carpe Diem.” —Horace

Advice for aspiring authors:

Robert Graves is attributed as saying, “There is no such thing as good writing, only good rewriting.” We often finish our first or second drafts and think, “I’ve done it. And it’s great.” And then we’re asked to change what feels like the entire book. My advice: Mourn the story you wrote. Love it for what it is. Then rewrite it. The new story will be different. And it will be better.

REVIEWS

“Promising Regency-set debut. Vivid period details and the hero’s grand romantic efforts will please fans of historical romance.” Publishers Weekly

“Garriott’s impressive debut distinguishes itself with its expertly evoked Regency setting, a cast of realistically flawed yet eminently relatable characters, and a sweetly satisfying love story. Teen fans of Austen-era love stories will fall hard for this impeccably crafted romance.” Booklist
