Well Women Witness - Letters From Christ by Dr. Oralisa Martin

Sr. Dr. Oralisa Martin has been called “a prayer warrior for Christ.” It has also been said of her that “She takes you to places that deepen your understanding of the mysteries of God.”

In her recently released Well Women Witness – Letters From Christ (Elm Hill, a division of HarperCollins Christian Publishing), she takes readers on a unique spiritual journey of interactive engagement and prayer designed for women to forge a greater intimacy with Christ.

“In the course of decades, scores and even centuries, Christians lived in a personal relationship with Jesus Christ,” says Sr. Dr. Martin. “The monks and nuns live an intimate relationship with Jesus Christ. As women living outside of monasteries, we find ourselves craving intimacy.”

Much of Sr. Dr. Martin’s work is through an association she founded in 1992 – The Oracle Religious Association in Washington, DC. The association’s mission is to bring the Gospel of Jesus Christ to a wounded world by providing experiences to adults and youth that will enable them to come into growing relationship with Jesus Christ, a commitment to His Church, a deeper sense of their self-worth and become change agents in society.

The author explains that the letters are part of a Well Women Witness (WWW) retreat. Each time as she prepares for the retreat, she says Christ dictates a letter to her which in turn she shares with the participating women.

She has gathered 10 such letters. They came to her at a time of personal pain, and she recounts how they “healed me at the heart of my grieving the death of my sister Lorina.”

And now Sr. Dr. Martin has created and published an interactive workbook, which she calls “a dialogue with Christ.” She describes the letters as “conversational,” with the hope of generating ongoing dialogue between Christ and the women readers. The letters are short, with simple messages.

The workbook then offers blank pages designed to encourage women to craft their own personal letters back to Christ each time. The book provides for periods of contemplation and reflection. And throughout the predominantly blank pages, there are short “prompts” to keep readers on course in continuing their own thoughts.

This is an experience in processing the brief and poignant messages, and then going to work for yourselves and developing messages of your own – and connecting and learning along the way. “You will find yourself just writing and writing, open and honest! In self discovery, you’re in a union with God.”

As an example, the first letter reads, “Way back when, in the beginning, I was, and I AM. I knitted you in your mother’s womb. And I have created you for a purpose. It’s critical that you know your purpose for existence. I have been trying to talk to you, but you’ve been busy. Oh, you’re busy about many things. Talk to me about what has you so busy!”

Through the letters, Sr. Dr. Martin says, “Some women will find Jesus Christ, while other women will grow in their relationship with Him, and still others will even fall in love.”

It is Sr. Dr. Martin’s hope that women who complete the workbook will share their encounters so that others may gain: “Love, forgive, heal the sick, feed the hungry, clothe the naked, free the oppressed, cast out demons, preach and teach the good news.”
