Christmas came early for fixer-upper fans with the publication of Homebody: A Guide to Creating Spaces You Never Want to Leave (Harper Design) by Joanna Gaines. Homebody, filled with opportunities for easy and simple changes for your home, brings the reader into Joanna’s farmhouse, invites you to get comfortable, and then gently pushes you toward the home of your dreams.

Home should be a safe place that can be relaxing and inspiring, but it should also reflect the people who live there. With examples from her own home and the many homes she has designed, Joanna gives you all the tools you need to design your next house or to improve upon your current one.

This handy guidebook introduces the reader to several techniques for discovering your home style and then implementing them in your existing home. With love, familiarity and honesty, Joanna brings you through worksheets and activities to help you figure out your unique style. Once you have followed her instructions and discovered your preferred design, you choose your home style.

Complete with photos, descriptors, and encouragements, you cannot even flip through this book without learning something new about your tastes. Joanna walks you through your entryway, living room, kitchen, dining, bedroom, bathrooms, kid spaces, rooms to retreat and utility rooms. With added subsections that include troubleshooting and tips on implementing these designs into your existing home, you cannot walk away from this guidebook without a head full of inspiration. Joanna even hands you the tools for the job with graph paper and design sketches at the end of the book for your future planning!

Joanna’s warm personality, charm and caring all break through Homebody and make the reader feel as if they are talking designs over with their best friend, personally catering to your home. This book taught me everything I could ever need to consider in my future home. Personally, I love the traditional style, which Joanna describes as classic, timeless, sophisticated, and stately. Then, moving forward through the book my choice of favorite home-type fit perfectly with my style choice! I chose “The Tailored Tutor” which is 100 percent traditional according to Jo.

The part of this book that was the most helpful for me was her section on entryways. She offers excellent advice on how to work with any space, which is great if you’re like me and have just a few feet of an entryway that then turns into stairs up or down. The troubleshooting subsection provided multiple ways of sprucing up the entryway including interesting floor tiling that’s distinct from the rest of your home, updating the door, and adding functional furniture.

Homebody will not only make you feel good about your home and its possibilities, but you’ll also want to get up, grab a sledgehammer, and start remodeling.
