Carmilla by Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu

Calling all Creampuffs: Season 2 of Carmilla (one of our favorite vampire webseries) is back, and I might die from excitement. OK, DIE might be a bit melodramatic, but you get the picture. We’re loving all this queerness in transmedia storytelling these days—and it’s about damn time!

Carmilla, which was co-created and written by the fabulous Jordan Hall, is based on the J. Sheridan Le Fanu novella of the same name. The show has grown in popularity since its first episode aired on YouTube in 2014. Fan art, fanfiction, Tumblring galore!

I mean, really, you can’t go wrong with a girl vlogging her college “studies” only to find out things at her university are not quite normal. Add in vampires, a lesbian love triangle and some kick-ass friends trying to save the world from a 1,000-year-old (did we mention evil?) vampire and you get this gem.

When we last saw the gang, they had just defeated Carmilla’s nasty mother who had been sacrificing virgins for let’s say, centuries? Remember when we thought the big bad vampire’s demise was at the cost of our precious Carmilla’s life? But then, SURPRISE, she wasn’t dead (like REALLY dead, not just vampire dead) after all. After giving her some chilled blood to sip (I would have preferred a milkshake or refreshing lemonade), Laura and her vampire roomie shared an epic (and long-awaited) kiss, which basically broke the ovaries of all the little Creampuffs around the internet.

But wait, there’s more!

The gang might have stopped a very old vampire from continuing to feed unsuspecting students to a demonic being—but what happens when that same monster gets fed one of the most powerful vampires alive (or is it dead?) Well … we don’t know! Ground shaking, earth quaking, world saving goodness, I assume.

So fill that Tardis mug full of tea, put on “Love Will Have Its Sacrifices” by SOLES in the background and cozy up to Season 2 of Carmilla! We’re ready—are you?

Following a near-fatal carriage collision, the beautiful young Carmilla is taken in by the narrator Laura and her father. The two young women become strangely attracted to each other, but there seems to be more to Carmilla than meets the eye. After her arrival in the village, local peasants begin to die and Laura falls ill and languishes. What is Carmilla’s true identity, and can she be to blame?

A thrilling Victorian tale of horror and mystery and a major influence on Bram Stoker’s DraculaCarmilla remains one of Sheridan Le Fanu’s most enduring works. This Valancourt Books edition, the first-ever scholarly edition of Le Fanu’s novella, follows the rare original text as it appeared serially in The Dark Blue in 1871-72 (including the original illustrations) and includes a new introduction and footnotes by Jamieson Ridenhour.
